So what’s happening with the investigation into President Donald Trump’s supposed collusion with Russia to swing the presidential election in Trump’s favor? This is supposed to be the left’s smoking gun, isn’t it?
Ever since it was discovered that Russia attempted to interfere in the presidential election, the left has been on a righteous crusade to convince the American public that Trump colluded with Russia to influence the election. Even now, conspiracy theories abound. The establishment media — AKA the left’s propaganda arm — has continually published news reports speculating on the relationship between the president and Russia.
Recently, the Washington Post published a piece that labeled Russia as “Trump’s Watergate.” Colbert I. King writes:
The chain of events that got started with the discovery of Russia’s interference in the 2016 presidential election has led to investigations by the FBI and two bipartisan congressional committees. Questions have been raised about possible cooperation of Trump associates with the Russians.
Those questions, as with the Watergate queries that dogged Nixon, won’t go away. Neither will the pressure from Congress and the media for answers, not just carefully crafted talking points.
King is missing an important difference between Nixon and Trump: nobody has found any credible evidence that proves President Trump worked with the Russians to win the election. You would think that would be an important point to acknowledge, yes?
Ironically enough, King’s piece makes no mention of the fact that no evidence has been found. As a matter of fact, the only time King uses the word “evidence” in the piece is when he discusses the fact that Trump has not provided proof that former President Obama wiretapped Trump tower. No big surprise there.
John Nolte, in a piece for the Daily Wire also compares “Russiagate” and Watergate. He goes through the entire chronology of the investigation into President Nixon. At every step of the way, the authorities were able to gather evidence against Nixon. And yet, since November, there has not been any evidence produced that shows wrongdoing on President Trump’s part. Nolte notes:
Within two days of the Watergate break-in, the media had already connected a crime to an employee on Nixon’s re-election campaign. Within six weeks, the media connected the break-in directly to the president’s re-election campaign. Within six months, two officials on Nixon’s re-election campaign had already been convicted!
In an interview with NBC’s “Meet The Press,” Former Director of National Intelligence James Clapper stated that he had not seen any evidence of a conspiracy between the president and Russia. Former CIA director Mike Morell has also stated that there is no evidence of a Trump and Russia collaboration.
With the information coming out about the Russia probe, it is becoming less likely that anyone will discover the proof the left so badly wants. Jim Geraghty of the National Review agrees:
But based on what we know so far, and barring some stunning new revelation, the Senate Intelligence Committee is going to find that two separate entities (Russia and the Trump campaign) worked separately towards the same goal (Hillary’s defeat). Surely the Trump campaign didn’t mind, and in fact gleefully touted the WikiLeaks revelations about the DNC and Podesta. But that isn’t the same as collusion, which is defined as “secret agreement or cooperation especially for an illegal or deceitful purpose.”
It seems that the Trump/Russia case might be all smoke and no fire. And yet, the left continues to perpetuate this narrative. They better be careful. If they continue to push this story, and the investigation concludes that there was no collusion between President Trump and the Russians, the leftist media will be even further discredited, if that is possible.
