What would happen if a prominent conservative organization publicly praised a right-wing terrorist? You know exactly what would happen. Members of the establishment media would trip over each other to get in front of a camera and express their outrage. Unfortunately, the fourth estate does not have this same reaction for leftist groups who praise left-wing terrorists.
On Sunday, the Women’s March posted the following tweet:
#AssataShakur is a civil rights leader who used her leadership position to challenge sexism within the Black Liberation Movement. (5/20)
— Women's March (@womensmarch) July 17, 2017
In the early 1970’s, Assata Shakur was a part of the Black Liberation Army (BLA) – a left-wing terrorist group. According to the International Centre for the Study of Radicalisation and Political Violence (ICSR), the BLA was formed by former members of the Black Panthers. They engaged in several types of violent activities including kidnapping, bank robbery, and the murder of police officers.
On May 2, 1973, Assata Shakur and two other members of the BLA were stopped by New Jersey police for a motor vehicle violation. Shakur and her accomplices were wanted for various felonies. When stopped, the BLA members fired at the police officers, wounding one and killing another at point-blank range. Shakur fled the scene, but law enforcement arrested her later. After her conviction, Shakur escaped from prison and fled to Cuba, where she resides today. She remains on the F.B.I.’s most wanted list. What a saint!
Nobody in the establishment media had anything to say about the Women’s March’s fawning tweet until CNN’s Jake Tapper decided to make a statement. Shocking, isn’t it? Tapper posted a tweet criticizing the Women’s March’s remarks:
Shakur is a cop-killer fugitive in Cuba. This, ugly sentiments from @lsarsour & @dykemarchchi …Any progressives out there condemning this? https://t.co/rXnHLgE2hR
— Jake Tapper (@jaketapper) July 18, 2017
One would think that even a leftist organization would know they had gone too far when CNN condemns them – but that wasn’t the case with the Women’s March. Linda Sarsour, one of the organization’s leaders, responded as any good hard leftist should – by playing the victim. Sarsour tweeted:
.@jaketapper joins the ranks of the alt-right to target me online. Welcome to the party.
— Linda Sarsour (@lsarsour) July 18, 2017
Yes, that’s right. Jake Tapper of CNN is the newest addition to the alt-right.
Sarsour – in an exhibition of an extreme lack of self-awareness – also asked Tapper to point out what ugly statements she made. He responded by referencing her comments about activists Ayaan Hirsi-Ali and Brigitte Gabriel. In 2011, Sarsour said in a tweet, “I wish I could take their vaginas away – they don’t deserve to be women.”
Aside from Jake Tapper, no other member of the establishment media has yet proven willing to take on the left’s adoration of Assata Shakur. This is not surprising – the fourth estate typically gives the left a pass even when they show outrageous behavior.
Imagine what would happen if a conservative group praised a right-wing extremist like Dylan Roof or Timothy McVeigh. Every news outlet in the country would excoriate them – and rightly so. As usual, the hypocrites of the establishment media refuses to call down the glorification of a left-wing terrorist by the Women’s March. It seems their criticism is reserved for those who are right of center.
