Always eager to find a non-issue to complain about, the leftist media has found another target: the congressional dress code. Yes, you read that right – the media is in a tizzy because Speaker of the House Paul Ryan enforces guidelines for how individuals must appear when they are in the Speaker’s lobby.
On Thursday, CBS News published a report detailing a story in which a female reporter was denied entry into the Speaker’s Lobby outside the House chamber because she was wearing a sleeveless dress. True to form, the left lost their collective minds.
Salon compared the incident to the television show “A Handmaid’s Tale,” which depicts a dystopian America where Christian zealots oppress women. In the show, the theocratic government relegates women to baby-making machines with no real rights. Salon stated:
Dress codes, other than those imposed for physical safety, are political, especially when their interpretation is left up to the judgment of those in power.
Try not to laugh too hard. The folks at Fortune Magazine chimed in with their own ridiculous comparison. They felt that the dress code “smacks of the kinds of implications raised by Vice President Mike Pence’s vow to not dine alone with a woman other than his wife.” They also state that this is an example of “powerful men building arbitrary barriers for women who are simply trying to do their jobs.” Lastly, Jezebel implied that Republicans should not be concerned with a dress code when they “deny essential health benefits to women.”
The reality is that the House’s dress code has been in effect for decades. Speaker Paul Ryan did not create the rules – he only enforces them – and the rules apply to men as well. Congressmen are required to wear “proper business attire,” which includes a suit and tie. This story is just a nothing-burger that the left is trying to feed the American public – and not even a juicy one. It is interesting to note that several journalists have taken to Twitter to express their disdain for the left’s delirium over this matter:
Dress code for men and women in the speaker's lobby has existed for years, it's nuts stories are saying otherwise. https://t.co/sTuasQDOAD

1980 was the first time I walked into the Speaker's Lobby. The dress code hasn't changed https://t.co/iQYVDlDh52

Man oh man this storyline has gone off the rails, Paul Ryan didn't create the dress code! https://t.co/fEKrGY2AL5

The left’s reaction to the CBS News report is indicative of their tendency to turn every issue into a cataclysmic problem. It is why the American public no longer takes them seriously. The fact that they compare the dress code to “A Handmaid’s Tale” shows just how far the left has slipped into their obsession with manufacturing outrage.
