The past few months have seen an enormous upheaval in our political environment. The election of President Donald Trump has marked the beginning of a significant shift in our government and society.
While the election has given many Americans hope, it has also brought out the ugly side of politics. This ugly side is present on both sides of the political spectrum, but it is far more prevalent on the left. In a sense, this is to be expected; their candidate lost the election. However, the dissatisfaction on the left has grown into something that poses a grave threat to our political discourse.
In the past, the right and left felt strongly about their political views. The debates would rage on the airwaves, in conversations, and even on social media. But it typically would not go farther than that. Now, in this new political climate, many on the left have decided to reject civility.
Instead of attempting to convince Americans to adopt their way of thinking, they have concluded that force is more expedient. Rather than treating their political opponents as fellow American citizens, they have chosen an approach that should alarm decent Americans both on the right and the left.
They are using the tactics of fascism. The left is using same methods the Brownshirts used to help the Nazis gain power.
To be clear, I am not saying that the left is comparable to the Nazis. I do not believe that they are intent on exterminating entire groups of people — however, the strategies they are employing are the same as the ones used by real fascists.
In a piece written for the American Thinker, Shari Goodman analyzes the new fascistic trend on the left. She notes:
Taking a page from Saul Alinsky’s Rules for Radicals, in which Alinsky advised his followers in Rule 13 to “pick the target, freeze it, personalize it, and polarize it,” the Left is now resorting to the fascist tactics of targeting Conservatives much like the Nazis who targeted European Jewry for their economic and social ills. Conservatives and Trump supporters are reluctant to identify themselves and conceal their support for fear of a backlash from the Leftist elites.
The backlash against those who voted for President Trump is intended to cow Trump’s supporters into silence. It is deliberately designed to prevent them from speaking in support of their chosen candidate. Goodman also writes:
The mainstream establishment media, which is no longer an unbiased source of information, has become the mouthpiece for the Democratic Left. They give voice, legitimacy, and cover while Conservatives are smeared as bigots, homophobes, racists, and fascists.
Our institutions, media, and Hollywood define our culture. They have created a climate of hate that threatens the exercise of free speech for Conservatives as well as for their safety. Given the hostile environment created by the Left with the aid of the media, is it any wonder that elderly Trump supporters were recently beaten up at a Trump rally in California or that Conservatives are afraid to wear any memorabilia that would identify them as Trump supporters.
In the same way that Adolph Hitler used propaganda to turn the German citizenry against the Jews, the left — mainly through the establishment media — is attempting to paint conservatives not as fellow Americans with whom they disagree, but as the epitome of evil and ignorance. To borrow a term from the social justice warriors, this is problematic.
When you continually use propaganda to demonize those you disagree with, it becomes easier to use violence against them. People find it easier to justify violence against bigoted white supremacists than against ordinary individuals who just happen to have different political opinions. Instead of arguing ideas, the left has chosen to implement an insidious campaign designed to turn well-meaning conservatives into villains.
One can say that the right has these same type of attitudes towards people on the left. Yes, there are those on the right who attempt to cast leftists as evil communists. However, this brand of rhetoric is not nearly as widely used as the vitriol being hurled at people on the right. Additionally, the right is not resorting to violence to achieve their political objectives.
From the days of the presidential campaign up until now, we have seen riots and violent protests. Trump supporters were attacked at rallies. Leftist activists destroyed property and set fires during President Trump’s inauguration. They used violence to prevent conservative agitator Milo Yiannopoulos from speaking at UC Berkeley. They attacked comedian Gavin McIness as he gave a talk at New York University. These types of strategies were routinely used by the Nazi Party to silence their political opponents.
Unfortunately, more and more people on the left are encouraging violence. Liberty Nation explored this issue in a previous article:
Even today, many on the left believe that rioting is the right thing to do. Liberals think rioting works. In an article for the Huffington Post, Jesse Benne puts it this way “Violent resistance matters. Riots can lead to major change.”
Benne also believes that anti-Trump violence is justified because the President is just so horrible that only violence can solve the problem. He goes on to write “The rise of Donald Trump has exposed the frightening underbelly of America’s foulest tendencies.”
One of the reasons why the left is embracing political violence is because it is part of their history. It is in their ideological DNA. Liberty Nation also states:
Leftists still idolize leaders who carried out numerous atrocities. Ernesto “Che” Guevara, who presided over the murders of thousands of civilians still adorns the T-shirts of young leftists. Fidel Castro, who imprisoned and murdered political opponents is also a subject of their admiration.
Of course, there was also brutality carried out by leftist dictators such as Josef Stalin and Mao Tse-Tung. Throughout history, the left has not hesitated to use violence to force people to conform to their way of thinking. It is this characteristic that is becoming more prevalent on the American left.
Fortunately, there are still plenty of people on the left who reject political violence. If we are going to return to civility in our political conversations, these people need to continue to speak out against this type of conduct. They need to be willing to repudiate the propaganda being disseminated by the establishment media and other leftist outlets. By working to discredit violence as a political tactic, America can return to engaging in productive political discourse.
