Former Secretary of State John Kerry has been quite busy lately. The Boston Globe reports that Kerry has been secretly working to undermine the Trump administration and save the flawed Iran nuclear deal.
But wait, isn’t there a law against private citizens negotiating policy on behalf of the United States? Yes, there is, but apparently, the left doesn’t care about Kerry’s blatant disregard for the law.
John Kerry Works To Protect The Iran Deal
According to The Boston Globe, John Kerry has been engaging in shadow diplomacy to prevent the Trump administration from withdrawing from the Iran nuclear deal. He has met with officials from Iran and European nations.
The deal, which involves six nations, was originally negotiated by Kerry during the Obama administration. Under the agreement, economic sanctions against Iran would be reduced if Tehran halted its nuclear weapons development program for ten years.
The former Secretary of State reportedly met with French President Emmanuel Macron and German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier. Both of these leaders support the deal. During his visit to the White House, Macron attempted to persuade President Trump to remain in the agreement.
Kerry also met twice with Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif to develop a strategy designed to save the deal. The Globe characterized the meeting as “an aggressive yet stealthy mission,” to apply pressure on the Trump administration.
The U.S. president is facing a May 12 deadline to review the nuclear deal. He has already indicated that he is leaning toward abandoning the agreement. Indeed, one of his promises during the 2016 campaign was to either pull out of the deal or to alter it in a way that was more favorable toward the United States.
After Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu gave a presentation showing that Iran had lied about their nuclear ambitions, Trump seemed even more willing to pull out of the deal. The president stated that Israel’s findings “showed that I was 100% right,” in his criticism of the agreement. While the left has not spoken out against Kerry’s actions, others have indicated that he violated U.S. law.
The Democrats Engage In The Usual Hypocrisy
Many have stated that Kerry’s behavior represents a violation of the Logan Act. This law prohibits private citizens from entering into negotiations on behalf of the U.S. government without permission. Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) stated that Kerry’s action “certainly raises Logan Act questions.” Harvard Law School professor Alan Dershowitz agreed but stated that nobody has ever been prosecuted under the law. “Fortunately for everybody, the Logan Act [is a] dead letter but if it were in existence, my friend John Kerry would be violating the Logan Act,” he said in an appearance on Fox and Friends.
This story is the second time the Logan Act has received attention in the news. Last year, Mike Flynn, who was to be President Trump’s National Security Advisor met with Russian officials during the transition between the Obama and Trump administrations. When Flynn’s actions were discovered, the left-wing establishment media went into a frenzy, claiming that it was a violation of the Logan Act and also evidence that Trump was colluding with the Russian government.
It is not clear whether or not Kerry’s secret diplomatic mission will have any impact on Trump’s decision regarding the nuclear agreement. However, it does highlight the left’s hypocrisy in the matter. It also shows the lengths to which the left is willing to go to undermine the Trump presidency.
