It’s a wild world at the southern border, and the raucous debate over illegal immigration isn’t calming down anytime soon. Hundreds of potential refugees are now attempting to gain entry into the United States. Depending on who you ask, they’re either invaders, or a band of innocent women and children seeking asylum.
While some of these migrants might have legitimate claims, others have proven President Trump right: They are attempting to enter the country illegally even if it means storming the border. The individuals in the latter group decided that attacking border patrol officers with rocks would be a good way to apply for asylum. It was not, and their violence was answered with tear gas.
In an intriguing departure from past behavior, the Mexican government seems to be finally cooperating with the U.S. to stem the flow of illegal immigrants over the border. According to recent reports, our southern neighbor will deport hundreds who attempted to force their way into the United States.
She even earned a brutal social media smackdown…
Of course, we would be remiss to neglect the role of the progressive left and their close compatriots in the establishment media, who attempt to paint this story as an example of the virulent bigotry of the Trump administration and any American who believes the country should have a say in determining who is allowed to come into the United States. But that’s no surprise, is it?
Mexico To Deport Migrants
The Hill recently reported that the Mexican government is “set to deport nearly 500 migrants who attempted to storm the southern U.S. border on Sunday.” Mexico’s interior ministry released a statement indicating that a group of migrants was detained after they tried to enter the U.S. “violently” and “illegally.”
Dozens were apprehended as they attempted to climb over a border fence in Tijuana. A significant number of these individuals managed to make it to a second border fence, where they were met with Customs and Border Patrol (CBP) officials who fired tear gas on the crowd.
President Trump has threatened to shut down the border if Mexico does not agree to house the migrants until their applications can be processed. Needless to say, the fracas has elicited the type of trembling, a pearl-clutching response that can be expected from the progressive left, who are working overtime to spin this story into a lively yarn about racism, xenophobia, and all of the other relevant “istophobic” caricatures favored by the leftist establishment.
Interference for Caravan
Senator Bryan Shatz (D-HI) took great umbrage at CBP’s use of tear gas on the illegal aliens attempting to invade the U.S. In a fit of not-so-righteous anger, he tweeted: “Why tear gas? Is this consistent with the Conventions on Chemical Weapons?”
Shatz was not the only Democratic lawmaker to express his outrage. The left’s new flavor of the month, Representative-elect Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) also chimed in with her own tweet:
“Asking to be considered a refugee & applying for status isn’t a crime.
It wasn’t for Jewish families fleeing Germany.
It wasn’t for targeted families fleeing Rwanda.
It wasn’t for communities fleeing war-torn Syria.
And it isn’t for those fleeing violence in Central America.”
As you might have guessed, Ocasio-Cortez’s tweet received widespread condemnation and ridicule from those who have actually read history books. She even earned a brutal social media smackdown from none other than Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC), who is now known as “Lindsey 2.0.”
Of course, we cannot forget the vaunted Fourth Estate, who immediately attempted to blame the brouhaha at the border on President Trump. Journalist E.J. Montini wrote a piece for USA Today, arguing that somehow, the president is at fault for the current migrant crisis. “It never should have come to this, to scenes of women and children running from tear gas fired by U.S. border agents,” he whined. “And it wouldn’t have happened if President Donald Trump hadn’t done everything he could to create a crisis at the border.”
But, as always, the progressive left is using this situation to practice their “do as we say, not as we do” philosophy. These individuals protesting the use of tear gas against migrants were suspiciously silent when the same measures were taken against illegal immigrants under the Obama administration in 2012, 2013, 2014, and 2016. It’s almost as if they don’t care about tear gas unless they can use it to attack a president they don’t like.
Is Mexico Coming Around?
The cooperation of the Mexican government when it comes to addressing the illegal immigration problem is a sharp departure from their typical approach. For the most part, the country’s government seemed content to allow people to pass through to cross the U.S. border as they pleased. In the past, they were enablers of illegal immigration, not opponents.
But it seems Mexico is turning over a new leaf. Their willingness to deport illegals is a positive step in the right direction. Even now, the U.S. and Mexico are working on a short-term strategy that would allow asylum seekers to remain in Mexico while the United States processes their applications.
Could this be the beginning of the solution to the problem? It’s hard to say. Mexico has previously been hesitant to take any significant action when it comes to preventing migrants from crossing the border illegally. Furthermore, the American left has made it clear that they do not intend to offer any real help. After all, why would they try to deal with the issue when they can simply whine about the president on CNN? Either way, the White House has sent a clear message: If you want to come to the United States, you’d best do it legally.
