When it comes to political comedy, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) is the gift that keeps on giving. Each week, Liberty Nation uncovers the blunders that keep us wondering: How did she ever get elected?
That establishment Democrats are not too keen on Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has become even more apparent in their response to the COVID-19 outbreak. It seems that the left-leaning politicians of New York are distancing themselves from her as they develop plans to combat the spread of the virus. So what could this mean for the overall effort to push the Democratic Party further to the left?
New York Democrats Push AOC to the Sidelines
The New York Post recently reported that high-profile New York Democrats have essentially excluded Ocasio-Cortez from the Coronavirus response initiative. One individual explained, “They are not looking to work with her and they want nothing to do with her,” because some believed that she would try to monopolize the spotlight and take credit for their efforts.
According to another insider, the representative has alienated many of her colleagues in the party. “She hasn’t made many friends in the delegation,” the source said.
The Post reported that Ocasio-Cortez was “conspicuously absent from the names of New York Democrats highlighted” when Gov. Andrew Cuomo and Rep. Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) came together to provide Coronavirus testing for churches or when Cuomo urged lawmakers to push for legislation to protect workers who have been laid off. Given AOC’s penchant for going off the reservation, it is no surprise that her fellow Democratic lawmakers would reject her involvement in the COVID-19 battle.
Of course, Ocasio-Cortez’s camp has denied that Democrats were pushing her away. “The Congresswoman has been in touch directly with the Governor since the crisis began. Over several phone calls, most recently this Monday, she has offered personally to assist him with state efforts in our district,” said spokeswoman Lauren Hitt.
Is The Socialist Faction On Its Deathbed?
The far-left progressive faction was dealt a severe blow when former Vice President Joe Biden, who is viewed as a moderate, passed Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) by to once again be the frontrunner in the Democratic primary. To make matters worse, most of the candidates that AOC supported through her newly formed political action committee failed to make the cut in their primary races. It appears that the representative’s efforts to oust moderate Democrats in these elections have resulted in a dismal failure.
So, will 2020 spell the end of the Marxist movement in the Democratic Party? Not so fast. While AOC might have fallen out of favor for the moment, she is not the only socialist pushing for far-left policies. The rest of the squad, which includes Reps. Ayanna Pressley (D-MA), Rashida Tlaib (D-MI), and Ilhan Omar (D-MN) have managed to avoid becoming pariahs by taking a more subdued approach. Moreover, it seems likely that these lawmakers will win re-election in November.
The squad, as well as other figures on the far left, are using the outbreak to push for their usual “free everything” progressive policies. It’s also probable that AOC might not take as abrasive an approach to the Democratic establishment and that she might even try to work within the system. Either way, the socialist movement will find a way to rebound. But here’s the question: Will the conservative movement be ready?
