When it comes to political comedy, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) is the gift that keeps on giving. Each week, Liberty Nation uncovers the blunders that keep us wondering: How did she ever get elected?
This week, Rep. Ocasio-Cortez weighed in on protests and riots that ensued in various cities across the nation in response to the death of George Floyd. While the nation was outraged over the video showing a Minneapolis police officer kneeling on the neck of a black man, AOC, like her allies in the corporate press, concocted ways to exploit the story.
Not surprisingly, she chose online retail giant Amazon as a target for her criticism. But in so doing, she demonstrated what only some realize: The progressive left views dead black Americans not as tragedies to be grieved, but as political weapons to be wielded against their opponents.
AOC Slams Amazon
As the protests spread from Minneapolis to other major US cities, Amazon put out a statement acknowledging the “inequitable and brutal treatment of Black people in our country.” The company stated that it stands “in solidarity with the Black community — our employees, customers, and partners — in the fight against systematic racism and injustice.”
Apparently, AOC did not see this statement as a sufficient expression of support for the black community. So she slammed the company for working against her open borders agenda, which, ironically enough, disproportionately harms black workers.
She tweeted: “I see a lot of corporations releasing bland statements w a hashtag.” She continued, “Amazon needs to stop integrating Ring cameras w/ police depts & selling facial recognition tech to ICE.”
Ring is an Amazon-owned company that manufactures doorbell security cameras. Currently, over 1,000 police departments have contracts with the business. These law enforcement agencies can use Ring’s cameras to access video footage recorded by its cameras.
But it is Amazon’s relationship with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) that has angered the lawmaker. The company has offered its facial recognition software to ICE to aid in its efforts to curb illegal immigration.
The point of contention on the left is that a study revealed that the majority of facial recognition algorithms are more likely to misidentify blacks than whites. Amazon did not make its software available for the study and has also objected to its findings.
AOC Exhibits Progressive Racism
There are a few problematic issues with AOC’s criticism of Amazon, and like Joe Biden’s comments on black folks, it reveals a hideous underlying reality about the attitudes of progressives towards African Americans. For starters, Amazon’s relationship with ICE has absolutely nothing to do with George Floyd or the treatment of black Americans by police whatsoever. The lawmaker is essentially using the death of a black man to push her open borders agenda, which is a remarkable display of racism on its own.
However, the other issue is the fact that more immigration — both legal and illegal — affects black communities far more than others. Studies have shown that immigrants typically compete mostly with African Americans for jobs by undercutting their wages.
Put simply, policies designed to make it easier to enter the country illegally are inherently racist. It’s also worth noting that those espousing these measures are the ones least likely to be impacted by them. Unfortunately, the irony of supposedly attacking racism by promoting a racist policy is wholly lost on AOC and her ilk.
