The Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) has decided to join the effort to link those who wish to curb illegal immigration to the gunman who carried out a racially motivated mass shooting in El Paso, TX. To most sensible people, implying that those who wish to improve border security are somehow akin to white supremacist terrorists would seem a bit of a stretch. But progressive logic mandates that one throw sanity out the window to understand the world through the leftist lens.
Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) recently conducted several raids on Mississippi-based chicken-processing plants. The agency arrested 680 illegal immigrants in the workplace sting. Naturally, the left isn’t too happy about the prospect of so many potential Democratic voters being sent back to their home countries. In response, the SPLC decided to add its voice to the cacophony of disingenuous race-baiting arguments
SPLC Parrots Another False Narrative
After ICE completed its raids, a representative from the SPLC condemned the agency’s actions. “Today’s raids are part of the ongoing war against immigrant families and the communities in which they live,” said SPLC Immigrant Justice Project Attorney Julia Solórzano in a statement. “What’s more, today’s raids needlessly ripped parents from their children during the first week of school.”
Solórzano continued, “It is especially sickening that days after immigrants were targeted by a gunman in El Paso, Texas, workers at plants across Mississippi witnessed armed agents descending on their workplace.”
The attorney also indicated that the organization is considering taking legal action against authorities for detaining illegal immigrants. “Our attorneys and advocates are closely monitoring the situation and exploring options to assist those impacted,” she explained.
Will It Backfire?
To those who follow politics, there is no small amount of irony in the SPLC’s attempt to tie efforts to curtail illegal immigration to a mass shooter who hated Hispanic immigrants. After all, the organization is no stranger to being linked to a mass shooting. In 2012, a gunman entered the Family Research Council, a Christian organization in Washington, DC, attempting to commit the same type of atrocity as the El Paso shooter. Fortunately, the security guard subdued him before he could injure or kill anyone in the building. Apparently, the incident did not inspire the type of self-reflection that would cause the organization to rethink its use of mass shootings as political weapons.
The gunman told the authorities that he targeted the Family Research Center because it was on a list of hate groups compiled by the SPLC. The organization has become infamous for labeling falsely conservative institutions as hate groups and has been the subject of numerous defamation lawsuits as a result.
Hypocrisy Isn’t Persuasive
But there is another dimension to the narrative the left is promoting, one that exposes the disingenuous nature of the hyperfocus on illegal immigration. ICE raids did not begin under President Donald Trump. The agency conducted numerous operations of this type under Obama, and yet there were no videos of crying children splashed across the media. There were no accusations of racism and xenophobia.
The leftists’ silence during the Obama administration’s efforts to curb illegal immigration screams far louder than the faux outrage they display under Trump. The difference in their responses to ICE raids under presidents of diverging political slants reveals that they see illegal immigrants and their children as nothing more than political pawns to be used against the president and his supporters.
The SPLC’s fake concern for those who enter the country illegally is likely to fool only those who already agree with its views. To those who do the research, it is nothing more than a cheap ploy. How can anyone take the SPLC seriously anymore?
