Former President Barack Obama stepped in it numerous times during his recent appearance on CBS’ 60 Minutes. But he really took the cake when he likened President Donald Trump to an authoritarian dictator who targets members of the press. Like many of his comrades, Obama appears to be adhering to the oft-repeated leftist maxim: Always accuse your opponent of that for which you are guilty.
Obama Compares Trump to Dictators
During his interview with Scott Pelley, Obama weighed in on the state of the election, taking issue with President Trump and Republicans who question the validity of the results amid allegations of voter fraud. But the former president mounted the highest of horses when he lectured the nation on how it should be different from countries run by brutal dictators.
Obama intimated that Trump contesting the presidential election somehow constitutes an attack on democracy. “It is one more step in delegitimizing not just the incoming Biden administration but democracy generally. And that’s a dangerous path,” Obama intoned. He continued: “There’s been this sense over the last several years that literally anything goes and is justified in order to get power.”
The former president went on to explain that this “sense” is “not unique to the United States.” There are “strong men and dictators around the world” who believe they can “do anything to stay in power. I can kill people. I can throw them in jail. I can run phony elections. I can suppress journalists.”
Obama continued his bloviating, using the trite-and-true “this isn’t who we are” admonishment. “But that’s not who we’re supposed to be. And of the signals I think that Joe Biden needs to send to the world is that, ‘No, those values that we preached, and we believed in, and subscribed in – we still believe.” But there was a huge problem with Obama’s comments, especially those on the treatment of journalists.
A Tryst With Totalitarian Tactics?
Obama wasn’t exactly the most ardent defender of freedom of the press. According to Fox News, “court documents released in early 2013 showed that the Obama administration secretly monitored Fox News’ James Rosen – whom the FBI dubbed a ‘criminal co-conspirator,’ despite never being charged with a crime.” Obama’s Justice Department seized Rosen’s emails using the Espionage Act, which was passed during World War I. Fox points out that this is “the same law was used in 1953 to charge and execute Julius and Ethel Rosenberg – two American communists – for allegedly passing secret information to the Soviet Union.”
Rosen’s supposed offense was publishing information leaked by a government official regarding North Korea’s plan to perform another nuclear test in retaliation for U.N. sanctions. But this isn’t all. The Obama administration also tapped the records of 20 Associated Press office phone lines along with personal phones belonging to various reporters. This action was part of an investigation into the release of information regarding an al Qaeda terrorist plot.
Leftist Hypocrisy Knows No Bounds
Obama’s remarks regarding Trump’s relationship with the corporate press are nothing new. Progressives have often accused the president of exhibiting authoritarian tendencies when it comes to the establishment media. Leftists can get away with this brazen act of hypocrisy because they know that the corporate press will not call them on it. Their loyalty to their progressive political agenda is more important than defending their constitutional right to practice their trade. Apparently, quashing press freedom is acceptable as long as it benefits the left, isn’t it?
