The Huffington Post wants to know why black victims of gun homicides do not receive the same treatment as the white victims of mass shootings like the one that occurred at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. It’s an interesting question — one that should be answered.
So I’m going to answer it.
Sarah Ruiz-Grossman penned a piece for The Huffington Post titled “We Need To Talk About Black Lives And Gun Violence After The Florida Shooting.” It the piece, Grossman laments the fact that while blacks represent the majority of homicide victims, they typically don’t get much attention from the media and the rest of the nation.
Grossman complains that groups like Black Lives Matter are criticized by conservatives. She points out the fact that black protesters against police brutality are often arrested during their demonstrations. However, she is focusing her criticism on the wrong targets.
HuffPost Doesn’t Understand Why Black Gun Victims Don’t Get As Much Attention
Near the beginning of the article, Grossman rightly points out that black victims of gun homicides do not receive as much attention as others. “For some black activists who have long been mobilizing around gun violence, the current wave of public attention and outrage over the issue is welcome,” she writes. “But it also invites the question of why there’s been comparatively little attention and outrage focused on the even more common reality of routine gun homicides in the country, which disproportionately affect communities of color, and specifically black Americans.”
Yep, she’s absolutely right. Many black Americans are being murdered by criminals using guns. As of March 27th, Chicago has had 109 victims of homicide this year, the majority of whom were blacks murdered with guns. Baltimore has had 59 homicides. Again, the majority of the victims were blacks who lost their lives due to gun violence. Philadelphia has seen 69 homicides so far this year. Most of these were perpetrated against blacks with guns.
Grossman goes on to point out that America is heaping praise on the Parkland shooting survivors, but not members of Black Lives Matter. She argues that there is “justified, universal outrage at a shooting in a largely white affluent area,” but not at black victims of gun violence. “The public is praising Parkland’s student activists, but not so much Black Lives Matter organizers,” she writes.
She’s right. This is especially interesting considering the fact that mass shootings are responsible for a small percentage of gun victims. Indeed, “regular” gun homicides kill far more Americans than incidents like the Parkland shooting. But, the question is: Why don’t these victims receive as much sympathy and attention as the white victims of mass shootings?
Here’s The Answer: The Left Doesn’t Care About Black Victims
Well, the answer to the question is simple: The far left does not care about black homicide victims. Philadelphia, Chicago, and Baltimore have some of the highest murder rates in the country. Indeed, blacks represent over half of the entire nation’s homicide victims while representing only 13% of the population. Every day, black men, women, and children are being gunned down in the street for no good reason.
But where’s the outrage from the establishment media? Where are the clips of CNN’s Anderson Cooper interviewing blacks who are tired of all the gun deaths? Why don’t the ladies on The View do segments highlighting the tragedies that take place in the inner city? When is MSNBC’s Chris Matthews going to plead with the governments of these cities to do more to curb gun deaths?
Let’s take it a step further. Why aren’t black activists organizing demonstrations against gun violence in their cities? Oh wait, they are!
Last Month, black activist groups partnered with local churches to hold a “Stop The Violence” rally in Arkansas. On March 24, Better Family Life — a group that works to reduce violence — helped to organize the MOVE March and Rally in North St. Louis, Missouri. Lastly, in Beaumont, Texas, black activists held another “Stop The Violence” rally.
The National Stop The Violence Alliance is an organization that regularly holds events such as these. These are just a few of the events that are held each year, along with rallies held by other organizations. But you know nothing about them because CBS, NBC, CNN, The New York Times, The Washington Post, and the other establishment media outlets won’t cover them.
Perhaps Black Activists Need To Change Their Priorities
In her piece, Grossman lashes out at Fox News for criticizing Black Lives Matter. She also slams the police for arresting BLM activists at protests. Of course, she doesn’t mention the fact that most of these individuals are being arrested for rioting and violence — not for peacefully protesting. While BLM may not deserve all of the criticism it receives, it has pushed a divisive message that has done nothing to help race relations or black murder victims.
The reason black victims do not receive as much sympathy is that they are not showcased in our news media. People don’t hear about the blacks who die in these cities daily. But why wouldn’t the media want to cover these victims? It isn’t hard to figure out.
The majority of blacks in America are killed by other blacks. But, black-on-black crime does not serve the left’s narrative. Mass shootings are useful because they can be used to promote their gun control agenda.
The left-wing media does not deem black murder victims as useful unless their murderer is white. It’s even better if the perpetrator is motivated by racism. Remember how the media covered Dylann Roof’s shooting of black churchgoers in 2015?
Case in point
The only reason the left-wing media cared about this incident is that the murderer was a white supremacist. Again, it was useful to the left’s efforts to portray blacks as victims.
Is it sick? Yes. Is it disturbing? Sure. But it’s reality. The far left only cares about black gun deaths when they can cynically use them to further the leftist agenda. Perhaps Grossman should change the target of her criticism. It is the left — who pretends to care about the black community — that is willfully ignoring the plight of black neighborhoods.
If they were serious about black lives, they wouldn’t ignore the majority of black homicide victims. Unfortunately, to them, we are only worth their attention when they can use us for their own purposes. The real question is: When the hell will we wake up?Feel free to comment below.
