Well, the Democrats just proved conservatives’ strongest suspicions regarding the party’s motives for embracing a stance in favor of open borders. Democratic lawmakers in Congress have repeatedly stymied the Trump administration’s efforts to curb the flow of undocumented immigrants into the United States, but they have recently taken an even more drastic step towards protecting illegals.

Apparently, it isn’t enough that several states provide driver’s licenses to individuals who reside in the country against immigration law. Access to welfare programs isn’t even sufficient for illegals, according to the left. No, dear reader, House Democrats are now defending states and cities that allow illegal aliens to vote in their local elections.

House Democrats Support Illegal Alien Voting

Democratic representatives voted to defend cities that allow illegal aliens to participate in local elections, as part of their For the People Act. This decision reverses a previous resolution that discouraged such a policy, passed when the GOP controlled the House. The Democrat bill expands voter registration and access to polls, and involves a significant rewriting of campaign finance legislation. Representative John Lewis (D-GA) lauded the vote, commenting, “We are prepared to open up the political process and let all of the people come in.” Not surprisingly, GOP lawmakers sharply criticized the bill. “What kind of government would cancel the vote of its own citizens, and replace it with non-citizens?” asked Rep. Dan Crenshaw (R-TX).

While it is currently unlawful for illegal aliens to vote in most local elections, a number of cities are allowing non-citizens – including those who broke immigration laws – to vote. If approved by the Senate, the bill would legitimize these practices across the county. That said, it would apply only to local elections; the bill does not propose to let undocumented immigrants vote in federal or state elections. Though of course, the prohibitions on illegals voting in state and federal races haven’t stopped many cities from allowing this practice to occur.

It’s worth pointing out that the proposed legislation seeks to implement a policy that is not popular with the American public. Last year, a survey showed that 71% of Americans do not support allowing illegals to vote in local elections. So why would the Democrats be so eager to give illegals the right to vote in any election? The answer is simple.

Democrats Showing Their Hand?

Democrats claim their support for illegal alien voting is motivated by inclusivity, but the real impetus for this stance appears to be something more cynical. A study conducted by the Center for Immigration Studies revealed that the majority of immigrants – both legal and illegal – tend to support Democrats. If they make it legal for unlawful immigrants to vote in local elections, Democrats know they will garner more support for their candidates. Indeed, this is likely to be the reason they have mounted such strong opposition to enhanced security at the southern border. The issue has little to do with political correctness or inclusiveness; it’s about political power.

The Democratic leadership is focused on gaining and keeping power. By pushing to gain voting rights for illegal immigrants, they are hoping to earn more votes – even if it means importing more potential voters.
