If you ever want to tick off The New York Times, Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) can show you how. Recently, an NYT reporter took a jab at the senator on Twitter over his apparently inappropriate behavior at a Trump rally. Unfortunately for him, Rubio was in a feisty mood.
But the journalist’s attempt to score some points on Rubio reveals a mindset that many on the hard left have adopted toward certain Republicans.
Reporter Slams Rubio for Smiling?
President Donald Trump recently held a rally in Florida during which he announced his campaign for re-election. Michael Barbaro, a reporter for The New York Times, couldn’t help but notice Rubio’s cheerful conduct during the event. “Very strange, for those of who covered 2016 campaign, to see Sen Marco Rubio smiling and chuckling in this audience,” he tweeted.
It was probably after Barbaro called his mom and dad to tell them how he totally destroyed Rubio on Twitter that he saw the senator’s crushing response. Rubio responded:
“In an unprecedented move a Republican Senator attended a rally in his home state in support of the re-election of a Republican President.”
But Rubio was just warming up. He continued: “As opposed to smiling & chuckling at a rally for a radical liberal candidate for President who will undo policies to confront China, reduce regulations & taxes, defend liberty in Venezuela & protect the unborn?”
Then, the lawmaker reminded readers of Barbaro’s bizarre reportage on the politician. In another tweet, Rubio stated: “This is the same reporter who in 2015 after 3 weeks of meticulous investigative journalism uncovered that my wife had traffic tickets, I had a fishing boat & my home has big windows. And in 2016 he broke the story that I had some boots with higher heel. ”
But Barbaro’s surprise at Rubio’s behavior during Trump’s speech isn’t anything new.
Always Never Trump?
The only Republicans the press likes are those they perceive as anti-Trump. For a while, Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) was one of their favorite conservatives because of his criticism of Trump during the 2016 campaign.
Of course, this only lasted until late last year when the lawmaker transformed into Lindsey 2.0 and ripped Senate Democrats to shreds during the Brett Kavanaugh hearings. Not surprisingly, the Fourth Estate did not like the new and improved Graham. He has been a hated target ever since.
Nobody can forget the fawning media attention that the late Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) received when he began his public feud with the president. After his death, the press lavished praise on the senator despite having smeared him mercilessly when he ran against Barack Obama. Apparently, opposing Trump means you’re no longer a racist/sexist/homophobe.
News outlets such as CNN, MSNBC, and others claim objectivity because they feature conservative pundits and politicians on some of their programs. But anyone can see that this claim is disingenuous; they clearly favor conservatives who hate Trump.
But if any conservatives considered members of the Never Trump crowd dare to express a favorable view of the president or his policies, they immediately fall back into the Nazi category as far as the corporate media are concerned. To the left, the only decent Republican is one who hates Trump.
