It appears that CNN’s new leadership meant business when they announced they would be bringing the activist media outlet back to when it actually practiced journalism. One of the network’s most well-known hosts, Don Lemon, is the latest on-air talent to be affected by this shakeup, but so far, he has fared better than his former colleague, Brian Stelter.
Don Lemon Relocated
Opening Don Lemon Tonight on Thursday, the media activist announced that he was moving from his prime-time slot to a morning show as the company restructures its programming. He assured the audience that he was not pushed into making this change; that it is, in fact, a “promotion.” Lemon informed his viewer or viewers:
“I was presented with an opportunity that I can’t pass up at this network, and we have a new boss, who is a morning show impresario. And he wants a morning show that will kick off the editorial direction of the network every single day,” Lemon elaborated. “And I am honored that he asked me to do it. For all those out there that are saying he moved me — he asked me and I said yes. I could have said no.”
“This is my show,” Lemon continued. “I have a contract for this show. I decided that I would take him up on that and take this journey with him, so this is not someone moving me. And by the way, this is not someone saying you must move to the right, Don Lemon, and you must not give so much of your perspective. None of that has happened. All of that is fodder for Twitter, which is not real, so stop it. I was not demoted — none of that. This is an opportunity. This is a promotion.”
The outspoken host was certainly outspoken, then, about his changed circumstance. Perhaps there is, or should be, an adage in the TV news business that says if you have to convince your viewers you haven’t been demoted, you’ve probably been demoted. There is a reason it’s called “prime-time.” If what Lemon claims were true, then Fox News would have already moved Tucker Carlson to a morning show. When a news anchor or host loses his or her prime-time slot, that is a demotion.
The network announced that Lemon will join CNN Newsroom anchor Poppy Harlow and White House correspondent Kaitlan Collins to form a “reimagined morning news program” that will launch later this year.
“There is no stronger combination of talent than Don, Poppy, and Kaitlan to deliver on our promise of a game-changing morning news program,” CNN CEO Licht said in a press release. “They are each uniquely intelligent, reliable, and compelling. Together, they have a rare and palpable chemistry. Combined with CNN’s resources and global newsgathering capabilities, we will offer a smart, bold, and refreshing way to start the day.”
CNN Making Good on its Promise?
Licht appears to be working to keep his vow to cool down the content on CNN’s programming. After six years of acting as a virtual propaganda arm for the Democratic Party, its ratings have sunk deeper than the Titanic and the formerly reputable company has become a laughingstock.
“So far, his tenure has been defined by trying to lower the temperature for a network that ran hot during the Trump administration,” according to a New York Times report. “The ‘breaking news’ banners have been kept to a minimum, and CNN has tried to tone down partisanship on its airwaves.”
The outlet made waves when it decided to cancel “Reliable Sources,” the Sunday morning program hosted by Stelter, who was fired. Stelter was viewed by many as a significant part of the problem as he constantly took a hyper partisan “Orange Man Bad” approach to his show.
Of course, not everyone is happy about CNN’s pivot towards authentic journalism. Former MSNBC anger management expert Keith Olbermann shrieked about Lemon’s relocation on Twitter. “Chris Licht (who, when we worked together at msnbc, I believed used to eat paste) has now surrounded Don Lemon with an ex-Daily Caller ‘journalist’ and somebody who last month demanded an apology from Biden to Republicans,” he tweeted. “The @CNN S–tstorm is here.”
Others on the left have whined about CNN functioning less as a propaganda mill. They even managed to get #BoycottCNN trending on Twitter.
But it appears Licht and company aren’t budging and have not yet bent to the pressure coming from the woke Sanhedrin. The question is: Can they weather this storm indefinitely or will there come a point when they bow once again to the mob?
