New Mexico – The News Frontier
It’s all happening in New Mexico. A place once thought irrelevant by the coastal-focused media is now the beating heart of American politics. Not only has the embarrassed governor been forced to show the nation that Trump’s national emergency is a real and problematic thing, but also, for those who doubted the Wall would ever get built, a rude awakening is in store.
Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham became the darling of the anti-Trump left back in February when she sent National Guard troops away in an effort to show that President Trump was engaged in fantasy. She said, “New Mexico will not take part in the president’s charade of border fear-mongering.” And how those words have come back to bite her.
Out of 33 counties, 31 passed resolutions decrying Grisham’s “bold” decision; they are refusing to be inundated with the 500 migrants a day being dropped on their doorsteps. The governor, facing growing backlash and petitions, just three months after removing the National Guard, has come crawling back to the federal government asking for assistance at the border.
Tripp Stelnicki, a spokesman, said: “The governor wants to continue to urge the federal government to increase its personnel on the border as a means of improving the logistical and communications output.”
What to Watch For
Governor Grisham seems to be losing any support she may once have had. As county after county signals its displeasure, it’s worth asking how long she can either hold out or, based on past performance, how long before she commits a complete about-face.
Wall Building in NM
Despite court cases, injunctions, and all manners of chicanery designed to prevent President Trump from building a proper wall along the U.S./Mexico border, it seems that the citizens of New Mexico are showing the all-American “can do” attitude that has been sorely lacking in recent times. The We Build the Wall project has begun construction on a stretch of private land and, by all accounts, is going at a fair pace.
Yet it’s not all sunshine and roses. In an effort to prevent the building of the wall, the city of Sunland Park began throwing up administrative roadblocks. Mayor Javier Perea first decided that environmental impact studies needed to be carried out; this was quickly followed by attempted injunctions based on safety issues. The final roll of the dice was that walls must be under 6ft to comply with local ordinance. Naturally, there was also the middle-management go-to excuse that the proper filings were “incomplete.” Despite all this, the We Build the Wall group persevered and has construction well underway.
What to Watch For
As the project finally begins to draw national attention, get ready for a snowball effect. The initial funding came through a GoFundMe campaign which, when the American public realizes that it can get national security for just a few dollars each, is sure to draw in a lot more donors.
No More Mr. Nice Guy
President Trump looks set to take off the kid gloves and accept the reality that Democrats in Congress have no intention of working together on bipartisan issues. Right before a planned meeting with House Speaker* Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), the president received word that Nancy was twisting the knife with the friendly media.
Pelosi declared to her fan-base that the president was involved in a “cover-up.” Not going quite so far as to call for impeachment, it was a standard dog whistle to those who would rather watch the country burn than grant a victory to the man they blame for all their woes. The president, in typical Trumpian style, shot back by announcing that he would declassify and release all the documents related to the Obama administration’s “spying” on his campaign.
The fact is that many positioned at the levers of power right now would have been aware of the surveillance, and even involved in the legal framework to allow it to happen. If there is any suspicion that this surveillance was anything more than simple due diligence, it could look very bad for those who have denied the Russia collusion investigation was a politically-motivated witch hunt.
What to Watch For
The Democrats have two options. They can either condemn the declassification of documents and seek injunctions, which to the public will appear a clear admission of guilt, or they can begin the spin and damage control by claiming it was their duty to investigate a man who could become the leader of the free world. If they opt for the latter, it sets an extremely dangerous precedent that few of the 2020 frontrunners could withstand.
