Gunslingers for Liberty: Election or Impeachment? – 11/10/19

It's all about elections and impeachment this week.

Editor’s note: Miss some of this week’s news, public policy and politics? Stay current, keep up and get out ahead of the pack with Liberty Nation’s Sunday News Round-up. Yeehaw!

Transcripts Without the Spin

At the very beginning of the impeachment investigation, Nancy Pelosi assured the America people that this would be a fair and transparent process … that pledge has not tuned out to be a keeper. Some of the proceedings have taken place behind closed doors, some have even refused entry to elected Republican Representatives, but most importantly, the flow of information has been handled exclusively by Democrats.

This last week saw the release of several transcripts pertaining to testimony from those deemed as useful witnesses by House Democrats. Instead of just releasing them as a batch, they have been drip-fed to the waiting media along with carefully crafted narrative from politicos on what the key takeaways actually are.

If these transcripts were really the smoking gun that Democrats have been seeking from the day Donald Trump won more Electoral College votes than Hillary Clinton, why do they need an accompanying narrative?

The fact is, that none of the testimonies so far have been from individuals with any first-hand knowledge at all. As Liberty Nation’s Graham J. Noble writes about the Mike McKinley interview:

McKinley’s testimony, when viewed objectively, raises a few questions about the inner workings of the State Department but, even then, the former official provided no firm evidence to support his personal observations. As for the allegations leveled against Trump by his political enemies regarding Ukraine, McKinley provided nothing factual that could be construed as either exculpatory or incriminating.

With apparently key figures in the inquiry refusing to come to Congress without an actual subpoena, do Democrats see their hopes of building a case collapsing around them? Is the drip-feeding of transcripts merely a ploy to keep Trump on the back foot and under media fire for as long as possible? If so, this is a very poor election strategy.

What to Watch For

The beginning of the inquiry was the time to build impetus and bring the American public onside. That failed. Be prepared for more witnesses who have only supposition and opinion being cast as insiders and featured on all news programs as “key witnesses” in bringing down Trump.

An Election Trend?

November 5 saw America go to the polls. A series of key races including Gubernatorial, State Senate, and others went ahead with both sides of the media divide desperately for a crystal ball glimpse into what the results may portend for 2020. Both sides were bitterly disappointed despite the spin and narrative they tried to sell to the public.

As often happens with electoral divination, people see what they want to see and disregard the rest. The reality is that Kentucky was a mixed bag, Mississippi was always going to stay red, and Virginia – as most suspected – was likely to turn blue. If a scorecard had to be made, to sum up the wins and losses, Liberty Nation’s Tim Donner suggests that the day went 60/40 in favor of the Democrats.

For LN’s constant readers, you may have noticed that we published a simple results summary listing key races, results, gains and losses. This quickly became one of our most popular pieces. Why? Because we presented just the facts, none of the spin … a quality sorely lacking in much of modern media.

Spin and narrative are weapons of propaganda, designed not to inform, but to persuade. When even basic facts are twisted to conform to a set party-line, it becomes clear that the so-called mainstream media can no longer be trusted.

What to Watch For

As we get closer and closer to the 2020 election, look out for newscasters and presenters acting as carnival prognosticators; every gust of wind, each smoke signal read as yet another sign that the era of Donald Trump will soon be over. But remember, if they can’t give you the straight facts, they’re likely trying to sell you something.

Washington Whispers & Other Juicy Tidbits

Be on the lookout for:

  • Democrat candidates won’t be able to abide such a packed field for much longer. As we get closer to 2020, hopefuls will need to build their war chests, which they can’t do well with so many competitors sucking up a few dollars here and there. Would-be candidates will move into overdrive hoping to take each other down. Who can survive unbloodied?
