The Ticking Clock
The deadline to get enough donations from a wide enough donor pool is tightening for Democratic presidential hopefuls. To keep the race going, it appears that contenders are looking to the fringes to drum up enough interest in their campaigns. Should the candidates fail to excite the electorate, they will not be included in the debates, effectively ending their chances.
Top Dems Biden, Sanders, and Warren (representing the old guard of the party), are secure in their chances, each having amassed a good-sized war chest. But what of the outliers like Buttigieg, O’Rourke, and even Kamala Harris? Without some major national traction, the “new blood” may not make it to the final stage.
Instead of working on policy platforms designed to inspire an otherwise bored voting public, these outsider candidates are looking to secure their places using little more than shock and awe tactics. The thinking seems to be that taking the most outlandish of positions will garner them publicity.
What to Watch For
Be on the lookout for how well Elizabeth Warren’s campaign does over the next couple of weeks. If she can maintain her current level of support, there’s a good chance she will be offered the VP ticket. This is the position that Kamala Harris seems to be pushing for; can we expect some personalized attacks?
Fair Play?
The US Department of Education Office for Civil Rights is launching an investigation into whether allowing transgendered individuals (male to female) to compete in female sports is actually a form of discrimination. Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF), a conservative legal organization, asked the department to open an enquiry after three female students felt they had been unfairly treated.

The high-school track stars believe that allowing transgendered male to females to compete ruins girls’ chances of not just winning races, but also of gaining scholarships or college places. Recent results show that the newcomers tend to win.
An ADF press release said:
“Ever since the Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference [CIAC] adopted a policy that allows biological males who claim a female identity to compete in girls’ athletic events, boys have consistently deprived Selina Soule and two other female athletes of honors and opportunities to compete at elite levels.”
The question this will come down to is: Who is the most discriminated against? Will the recent love of all things intersectional create dividing lines between feminist and trans activists?
What to Watch For
This could result in a “hierarchy of oppression Olympics.” Should the investigation find enough grounds to proceed, we will see lobbyists from all sides demand that their particular interest group is given priority. Who could have seen this coming?

Be on the lookout for:
- Hong Kong is where it’s all happening this week. No stranger to protest, the island has seen its fair share of organized rallies, but something different is taking place now. With protesters wielding US and UK flags, and singing the national anthems of the respective nations, Beijing may see this as an outright rejection of “one country, two systems.” There are troops waiting on the border in Shenzhen. Let’s hope that we don’t witness another Tiananmen Square.
