Another One Bites the Dust?
The progressive group that launched Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) into office, the Justice Democrats, have pounced on yet another Old Guard target. This time, they’re trying to tear down Rep. Eliot Engel (D-NY), who has been in Congress since 1989. Engel recently had a hot mic mishap and was overheard saying that he wouldn’t even care about engaging in a speaking event in the Bronx if he didn’t have a primary to worry about. That’s just the excuse, of course. The young progressives were on the prowl for another political dinosaur to take down anyway.
As Liberty Nation’s Joe Schaeffer explained:
“Talk about playing into the hands of your opposition’s framing. The quote went viral and Engel, 73, came across as your classic conniving, opportunistic politician looking to placate the peasants in an election year. Ocasio-Cortez lost little time in pouncing. The next day, she endorsed Engel’s primary foe, Jamaal Bowman.”
What to Watch for
Eliot Engel has taken a lot of heat lately from the far left, and some of it is even warranted. Don’t be surprised if this is his last term in office.
AOC Takes Shots at the Wrong Target
After the killing of George Floyd, Amazon put out a statement acknowledging the horrible treatment of black people in America. But that wasn’t good enough for Ms. Ocasio-Cortez.
Liberty Nation’s Jeff Charles wrote:
“Not surprisingly, she chose online retail giant Amazon as a target for her criticism. But in so doing, she demonstrated what only some realize: The progressive left views dead black Americans not as tragedies to be grieved, but as political weapons to be wielded against their opponents.”
The ironic racism of her own policies isn’t the only thing AOC seems to have missed. According to Opensecrets.org, Amazon.com has been her third-largest contributor this election cycle, having donated $18,429 to her bid to keep her seat in November.
What to Watch for
Only time will tell whether Jeff Bezos takes Ms. Ocasio-Cortez’s comments personally, but it’s usually a bad idea to bite the hand that feeds you. It seems at this point quite likely that she just talked herself right out of any more Amazon money.
Washington Whispers & Other Juicy Tidbits
Be on the lookout for:
- Her own donors and fellow Democrats aren’t the only folk Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has taken shots at lately. Earlier in the week, she called out the Washington Redskins. “Want to really stand for racial justice? Change your name,” she tweeted in response to the team’s #BlackOutTuesday message. The Redskins have faced many challenges regarding the team name over the last several decades, so this demand is unlikely to accomplish her goal. However, since it’s AOC tweeting it now, you can expect plenty more progressives will be dumping on the Redskins.
