What’s in a Name?
President Trump refuses to stop calling Coronavirus “The Chinese Virus,” and it’s driving the left nuts. As anti-Trumpers berate the commander in chief as a racist, they seem to have forgotten that just as recently as a few weeks ago, they were saying it too. The Washington Post ran the headline “Chinese coronavirus tally continues to grow” just a couple weeks before attacking Trump with “Trump dubs COVID-19 ‘Chinese virus’ despite hate crime risks.” They’re certainly not alone, and then there’s the fact that no one ever said Spanish Flu was racist.
In reality, they have a very different reason for their demands – and it has nothing at all to do with racism. Put simply, the left needs something to attack Trump about. If it weren’t this, it would be something else.
As for the president’s refusal to conform, he has his reasons, too. As Liberty Nation’s Mark Angelides explained:
“The reality is that Donald Trump is using the term China Virus for a very specific reason: to combat Chinese state-sponsored propaganda that is trying to accuse the U.S. of releasing the virus in China. We can perhaps understand why the Communist government might not want its own people, people who are notoriously revolutionary, to think this was a failing of the state, but that doesn’t mean that the president of the United States should meekly roll over and let them carry out their information war.”
What to Watch For
Don’t look for the president to stop using the expression “China virus” anytime soon. His detractors will likely continue to berate him for it; he will likely continue to not care. The issue that matters here is how U.S.-China relations fare throughout this crisis.
A Little Breathing Room
Between the various Coronavirus response bills, the rules have changed just enough to have CPAs in a panic over whether they can figure it out before the April 15 tax filing deadline. The Trump administration had already moved the deadline to pay in 90 days back to July 15, but now they have postponed the filing date as well. There question now, however, is how much good this will actually do for people. As Liberty Nation’s Kelli Ballard wrote:
“It is a matter of debate how much financial help this extension will be for the economy. While it keeps money in the hands of Americans, it may only be a short-lived reprieve. Yet, the government is taking all kinds of extreme steps to try and ease the fears of the people and keep the economy from going belly up.”
What to Watch For
It will take a while for tax professionals to figure out all the new rules, so bookkeeping and tax filing will be a bit confusing for a while. Now the Senate is working on the checks President Trump promised Americans. It remains uncertain exactly who will get how much, but the bill currently being considered by the Senate would see, for those making less than $75,000 a year, $1,200 per adult and $500 per child.

Be on the lookout for:
- California’s governor ordered the entire state be locked down, with a $1,000 fine for those who violate the order. Now that the first state has broken the ice, look for others to follow suit.
