Gunslingers for Liberty: The Rise and Fall of Bloomberg – 2.23.20

Is Michael Bloomberg his own worst enemy?

A Dangerous Debate

Former NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg took to the debate stage in Las Vegas hoping to topple Bernie Sanders from the number one spot. Unfortunately for him, the other candidates had already decided it was open season on billionaires. Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) took him to task over the existence of nondisclosure agreements with female former employees who have made damaging claims about the working environment at his company.

His poor performance has not helped his standing, yet it’s difficult not to suspect that even the digs being taken at Bloomberg were slightly pulled; the other contenders seemed reluctant to go for the jugular.

Liberty Nation’s Joe Schaeffer wrote this week on how Bloomberg’s opponents missed a major opportunity:

It’s a shame his Democrat rivals chose not to address Bloomberg’s very real vulnerabilities and instead resorted to petty character assaults. Sens. Warren and Bernie Sanders (I-VT) were two figures on stage in Las Vegas who have strongly denounced the global trade deals that have dismantled so much of U.S. manufacturing. Bloomberg has stoutly defended such pacts, frequently criticizing President Trump and his America First agenda in the process.

What to Watch For

Unless Bloomberg can come up with some zingers of his own, he will avoid any unnecessary town halls. Appearing weak in a political race – even if only for the party nomination – is the surest way to lose support. Can we expect to see more personal attacks?

Heartland Rejection

By now, the entire country has come to expect Joe Biden to stumble from one gaffe to the next; that he is not quite so polished as other candidates is part of his appeal but, for Michael Bloomberg, potential voters expect something different. It doesn’t look like they’re going to get it.

Bloomberg has said many things over his long career that were either insensitive or just flat-out wrong, yet the problem for him is that odd remarks are now a major part of cancel culture. Whether he still holds his beliefs or not, whether they were valid opinions or not, the left has ramped up the offense engine to such a degree that there’s no escaping the self-righteous mob mentality.

His latest bumble, however, may turn out to be the cross on which he burns … it may even be his “Deplorable” moment.

As Liberty Nation’s Sarah Cowgill reported:

Here’s the gem, however, that sent rural Americans to their keyboards to vent: “I can teach anybody … to be a farmer. It’s a process. You dig a hole, you put a seed in, you put dirt on top, you add water, up comes corn.”

From Ohio, David Ables pounced with, “Mike if we have a famine you will know what a farmer does. Farmers have gotten so good at what they do no one worries about food. Too bad politicians haven’t improved as much …”

And then there’s Craig Jones from rural Blue Ridge, VA, who gave us this vivid mental picture: “I think Bloomberg would make a great farmer. He wouldn’t have to bend over to plant his corn.”

Ouch.

Is it perhaps an issue for all Democrat contenders? Are they so obsessed with winning votes from the coastal elites that they forget this race is not decided by Californians and New Yorkers alone? Ignore the Electoral College at your peril.

What to Watch For

At some point, Michael Bloomberg will have to hire someone whose job it is to tell him “no.” For more on this angle, check out this week’s Uprising podcast.

Washington Whispers & Other Juicy Tidbits

Be on the lookout for:

  • The latest attempt to paint President Trump as a Russian agent stalled before it even began. That won’t stop Adam Schiff from playing it up for all it’s worth to a willingly gullible media.
  • With Super Tuesday on the horizon, we can expect to see plenty of Democrat back-biting. How many contenders will succumb to the campaign warfare?
