Flyover Folk Fed up with Fake News

by | Mar 22, 2018 | Columns

President Trump once again spent his week swatting the bothersome flies attempting to distract him from doing his job.  The newshounds at CNN continue to chase Stormy Daniels’ every sultry move, fixated on an alleged affair from a decade ago, followed by the old standard, Russia.

Hours have been spent agonizing over the possible reasons behind Trump’s congratulatory call to recently reelected Vladimir Putin, and the minutiae laden analysis of what Special Counsel Mueller’s facial tics and head tilts suggest.

To be fair, the media giant has covered Justice Ruth Bader-Ginsburg’s top-10 cities to purchase hair Scrunchies, which is of national importance.

And the folks in the Heartland have turned their television sets off.

Jackie, 48, Kansas born and raised, is frustrated to say the least:

“I turned the news on this morning and flipped through channels for anything new on the horizon. What were the major cable news stations reporting? A porn star with a grudge and the daily Russia soap opera.  All this nonsense while a kid who terrorizes an American city, blowing people up, is all but ignored in favor of junior high style gossip.”

Stormy Daniels

Jackie has family in the Austin area and the lack of timely reporting has her ire up.  She is also concerned with the increase in school shootings and violence inflicted on children by children.  She advocates stiffer background checks but does not place the blame on guns, politicians, parents, or the NRA.  Instead, Jackie paints a bleaker picture, “These violent attacks are a symptom of a more sinister problem; that our children have something wonky in their brains that generations before us did not. We need to search for our answers medically.”

Heading further west for commentary, I dialed up a former school chum to check the pulse of the Four Corners region of New Mexico – where oil and gas drive the economy.  Mike, 55, an avid advocate of the Second Amendment, family man, and small business owner, just wants the white noise around Trump to stop.

“Our economy is starting to rebound thanks to Trump’s eradication of overreaching regulations and tax reform.  As for this Stormy Daniels and Putin phone calls, who cares? She is looking to make a buck and as for Putin, what’s that old adage, “keep your friends close and your enemies closer?”  This is why I won’t watch fake news channels and haven’t for almost three years.”

Finally, my tour around the Midwest circled back east with my own cousin, who leans liberal, cannot stand our president, and wishes to remain anonymous.  Her analysis over coffee at the kitchen table was priceless:

“I have to turn off the news channels I do actually like because they don’t report the news anymore.  Heck, the other day one of the programs had a friend of a friend of Stormy Daniels on for an interview. What is this, Entertainment Tonight, All Night?”

People in the flyover states are a common sense, no holding back bunch, who take patriotism seriously and respect the office of president, and they are fed up with nonsensical and unimportant personal attacks from the liberal left.  As for the brow beating by the media for conformity on issues, our Kansas native, Jackie, let this last provocative statement fly, “Are the globalist Democrats driving an agenda through the media or are internationally owned media conglomerates propagating their agenda through their easily enamored politicians?”

Who’s zooming whom?  Maybe the film “Wag the Dog” should be on every conservative’s required viewing list.
