Project Veritas — a conservative watchdog organization — has done it again. The group, which specializes in exposing the dirty secrets which the left would rather remain hidden, recently ripped the mask from the face of one of the world’s most powerful tech giants, revealing an endeavor to manipulate the American public into bringing about the progressive agenda.
The organization released a video in which an employee working for Google details the company’s covert efforts to influence the 2020 election and further suppress conservative content on the internet. The video also shows undercover journalists working with Project Veritas surreptitiously capturing statements from other unsuspecting Google employees.
Google Employees Tell All
One of Project Veritas’ undercover journalists spoke with Jen Gennai, Google’s Head of Responsible Innovation. She explained how the company enforces its definition of “fairness” through the results they provide on their search engine. “Our definition of fairness is one of those things that we thought would be like, obvious, and everyone would agree to, and it wasn’t,” she complained. “There was the same people who voted for the current president who do not agree with our definition of fairness.”
The Google executive also addressed concerns that the company has become too powerful and should be broken up by the government. Democratic presidential hopeful Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) has suggested such an action. In response, Gennai argued that this would not be an appropriate solution as it would make it harder for the tech industry to ensure that a candidate like President Trump would not be elected.
“That will not make it better, it will make it worse because now all these smaller companies who don’t have the same resources as we do will be charged with preventing the next Trump situation, it’s like a small company cannot do that.”
James O’ Keefe, founder of Project Veritas, sat down with an anonymous Google insider who further explained Gennai’s statements. “They are a highly biased political machine that is bent on never letting somebody like Donald Trump come to power again,” he said.
The Google employee then described how the company changed its focus after Trump’s victory in 2016. “Right after Donald Trump won the election in 2016, the company did a complete 180 in what they thought was important,” he remarked. “Before, they though self-expression and giving everyone a voice was important, but now they’re like ‘hey there’s a lot of that, and because there’s a lot of hate and misogyny and racism, that’s the reason why Donald Trump got elected, and so we need to fix that.’”
After the 2016 election, the company supposedly began “introducing the concept of machine-learning fairness.”
Fairness was a word that came up repeatedly in the video, but while the term might seem benign, the employee contends that Google’s definition of the word is far more sinister:
“Fairness is a dog whistle. It does not mean what you think that it means and you have to apply doublethink in order to understand what they’re really saying. What they’re really saying about fairness is that they have to manipulate their search results so that it gives them their political agenda that they want. And so, they have to re-bias their algorithms so that they can, they can get their agenda across.”
After the video made its rounds on social media — despite attempts by Google to suppress it — Gennai wrote a blog post on Medium defending her statements. “Project Veritas has edited the video to make it seem that I am a powerful executive who was confirming that Google is working to alter the 2020 election,” she wrote. “On both counts, this is absolute, unadulterated nonsense, of course. In a casual restaurant setting, I was explaining how Google’s Trust and Safety team (a team I used to work on) is working to help prevent the types of online foreign interference that happened in 2016.”
Time for Government Involvement?
The video also revealed that Google and its subsidiary, YouTube, is actively squelching right-leaning content on its platforms. Pundits like Dave Rubin, Tim Pool, and Steven Crowder have had their video content demonetized. Combined with the censorious tack taken by social media companies like Twitter and Facebook, many on both the left and the right have been locked in a spirited debate over the government’s role in this equation.
Shortly after the video was released, Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) questioned Director of Google User Experience Maggie Stanphill during a hearing. He brought up the statements made by the individuals shown in the Project Veritas video, asking if she believed “It’s Google’s job to make sure that somebody like Donald Trump doesn’t come to power ever again.”
Stanphill toed the company line, claiming that they build “for everyone including every single religious belief, every single demographic, every single region, and certainly, every political affiliation.
Unfortunately for Google, the evidence seems to suggest otherwise. Cruz didn’t appear to buy what Stanphill was selling. “I think these documents raise very serious questions about political bias at the company,” Cruz pointed out.
Many on the right believe that the government should take a more forceful role in regulating tech companies — especially social media platforms. Others believe that the free market should provide a solution.
But when it comes to an organization like Google, which possesses worldwide influence and the ability to manipulate minds on a global scale, it might be wise to at least consider a government solution. The company can go far beyond shadow banning conservatives and suspending accounts; they can quite literally sway elections by ensuring that the American public only sees the approved viewpoints. Google has the potential to pose a terrible danger to the democratic process, and it is difficult to accept that one entity should be allowed to enjoy this level of dominance over the populace.
