Get ready to hear something shocking. Are you ready? Okay, here it is: the left has once again accused President Donald Trump of being a dictatorial monster who wants to completely annihilate our liberties.
In the latest example of leftist hysteria over President Trump, German weekly news magazine Der Spiegel published a cover depicting an image of President Trump beheading the Statue of Liberty. The image shows the President holding the severed, bloody head of Lady Liberty in one hand, and a large knife in the other. The cover was intended to resemble the pictures taken by the Islamic State when they execute their prisoners.
Yes, that’s right. They compared Trump to ISIS.
The cover was drawn by a Cuban artist, Edel Rodriguez, who is based in the United States. It was one of many covers that Der Spiegel has featured that criticize President Trump, however, this past week’s cover was the most extreme.
In an interview with Callum Borchers of the Washington Post, Rodriguez explained the cover, “It’s a beheading of democracy, a beheading of a sacred symbol.” He went on to say, “The president of the U.S. is a racist. He is attempting a coup from the top; he wants to establish an illiberal democracy, or worse; he wants to undermine the balance of power”
Wow. I had no idea Trump was trying to seize power and destroy our republic. Why didn’t anyone tell me?
On a serious note, this cover is indicative of the feverish delirium that has characterized the left’s approach to President Trump ever since he was elected. They have been doing their very best to make him seem like a despotic dictator bent on dominating our nation.
And they’re still failing.
The problem with this approach is that it is so obviously outside the realm of reality that nobody is taking it seriously. They have “cried wolf” too many times about every Republican president, or presidential candidate. It’s hard to listen to legitimate criticism from someone who also says that Trump is the second coming of Adolf Hitler. It just doesn’t work.
Here is the reality. President Trump has definite flaws. Every president does. But if the left is going to”freak out” every time Trump signs an executive order, sends out a tweet, or scratches his nose, it will make it more difficult to engage in any type of meaningful conversation. That might be what many of them want. The problem is that in the end, it will hurt them far more than it hurts conservatives. I can live with that.
