Almost six weeks after the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, the debate on gun control continues to rage. Americans on both sides of the issue are arguing for policies that can prevent more deaths from mass shootings.
But what about gun homicides that aren’t the result of mass shootings?
As most people know, more Americans are killed in regular gun homicides than in mass shootings each year. Moreover, most criminals who commit murders using firearms carry out their crimes with handguns. And yet, the left wants to ban “assault rifles” like the AR-15.
Cities like Detroit, Baltimore, and Chicago have some of the highest gun homicide rates in the country. They also have some of the strictest gun control laws. These cities are only a few examples demonstrating why stricter gun control laws don’t work.
The Democrats’ Policies Do Not Prevent Gun Deaths
The anti-gun lobby continually rails against what they call “assault rifles” — also known as scary-looking guns — in an effort to promote their crusade against the 2nd amendment. Indeed, a recent poll showed that while most Democrats don’t want to ban guns altogether — a significant number approve of taking firearms from law-abiding gun owners. Yesterday, tens of thousands of students marched in various cities for the “March For Our Lives” rally. These rallies featured speakers who pushed for stricter gun control measures against rifles.
Unfortunately, the initiative to ban rifles will do nothing to limit mass shooting deaths. According to the F.B.I., Americans are more likely to be murdered by a handgun or knife than a rifle. Moreover, in a situation such as a mass shooting, a rifle isn’t much more useful than using a handgun since most of these encounters are at close range.
Interestingly enough, the left is not proposing any measures that would ban or limit access to handguns. Their efforts over the past few decades have been primarily focused on rifles despite the fact that they are not used as often as handguns. So why is this the case?
Why Are The Democrats Neglecting Real Solutions?
There two reasons why the left would focus on rifles rather than handguns. The first involves creating the illusion that they are actually doing something about gun violence. Many of the demonstrations from students reveal the fact that they want the government to do something about mass shootings, but they aren’t sure what action Congress should take. They know that gun violence is an issue, but they have no idea how to resolve it using legislation.
These individuals just want to see the government do something because it will make them feel safer. Left-leaning politicians are riding this wave and using it to smear their political opponents who do not believe that more legislation will decrease gun deaths. They paint supporters of the 2nd amendment as people who do not care about children who have been murdered. In their minds, if the government passes stricter gun laws, we will have fewer mass shootings.
Another reason why so many on the left focus on rifles is because it is the first step in their ultimate objective: banning firearms altogether. A recent survey showed that 44% of Democratic voters want to ban all semi-automatic weapons. This type of ban would effectively disarm the American public. However, the Democrats know they cannot push for removing handguns at this moment. Instead, they wish to ease into policies that will eventually make gun ownership illegal by starting with initiatives that might be more palatable for Americans who are concerned about gun violence.
The left is using the debate over mass shootings to further their anti-gun agenda. However, this isn’t to say that most Democrats do not care about children being murdered in mass shootings. Indeed, most Americans are heartbroken whenever a new attack occurs. However, the solutions the Democrats are proposing would violate the rights provided for us by the 2nd Amendment. Furthermore, it would not put a dent in the number of gun deaths since only criminals would own firearms.
Americans Are Not On Board With The Democrats
The gun violence in Chicago is a clear example of why gun control does not work. The recent shooting at a school in Maryland illustrates the fact that having security in schools can prevent a situation like the attack on Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. These facts are inconvenient to the leftists who believe that the government is the only entity that can solve this problem.
Fortunately, the majority of Americans agree more with conservatives when it comes to mass shootings. Gallup recently released a poll showing that while Americans supported background checks, an overwhelming number also support better security in schools and training for police officers and first responders.
While most Americans do support conservative proposals on mass shootings, the far left is still trying to push their agenda. If they are allowed to succeed, we run the risk of losing one of our most valuable rights. The question is: How will we prevent this?
