The open borders crowd has much in the way of criticism for how things have been handled at the southern border under both the Trump and Biden administrations. But missing from their holier-than-thou diatribes on immigration is one critical factor: Actual solutions. However, these individuals are not short on absurd, pie-in-the-sky recommendations that would only worsen the problem. Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-MI) recently graced the country with another one of these ridiculous suggestions in a video she uploaded on Wednesday.

Defund Everything!

In the video, Tlaib called for the defunding of U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS). That’s right: Tlaib’s answer to the migrant crisis is to eliminate the agencies tasked with addressing immigration issues.

During a video meeting with Just Futures Law, an advocacy group that argues against deportations, Tlaib insisted that the best way to cut funding for technology designed to curb illegal immigration would be to eliminate ICE, DHS, and CBP, saying:

“The simple answer to that question is we must eliminate funding for CBP, ICE and their parent organization: DHS. Time after time, we have seen it, as advocates on the ground, as human services agencies on the ground, continue to see over and over again, that these agencies are inept to humanely guiding migrants through our immigration system, and further continue – instead, they further continue to terrorize migrant communities located within our communities.”

This is not the first time the lawmaker has pushed for eliminating funding for these agencies. She was one of several high-profile Democrats at the forefront of the “Abolish ICE,” campaign.

What are These People Talking About?

It is difficult to ascertain the logic in Tlaib’s arguments given the fact that she never quite manages to explain what the United States should do after getting rid of these government departments. Neither she nor any of her comrades have put forth an alternative solution to the immigration issue.

The reason why seems obvious: These individuals do not want solutions; they want a free-for-all at the southern border. The reason why they oppose CBP, ICE, and DHS isn’t because those entities have failed to treat migrants humanely; it’s because they don’t want the government enforcing immigration laws in the first place.

In June, House Democrats proposed a spending bill that would slash funding to immigration enforcement agencies while hundreds of thousands of migrants and unaccompanied minors have traveled to the southern border. When it comes to immigration, it seems clear that Tlaib and the gang believe the best solution is no solution.
