In the midst of his continuing conflict with Democrats over politically motivated investigations, President Donald Trump has asserted executive privilege on documentation requested by the House. The Democrats continue to seek any avenue through which they can impeach him after the Mueller Report destroyed their chances of painting him as a Russian agent.
But now the Democrats have moved on to another strategy, launching investigation after investigation in hopes of finding a smoking gun. Recently, the House Oversight Committee threatened to hold two members of Trump’s cabinet in contempt for refusing to respond to subpoenas. But it appears the president isn’t going to make things easy for the Democrats.
Executive Privilege
The president decided to use his executive privilege to limit the amount of documentation either Attorney General William Barr or Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross could be compelled to submit to Congress. This is a marked escalation in the showdown between the White House and Democratic representatives.
The Department of Justice slammed the decision as “unnecessary and premature,” and stated that it had “engaged in good-faith efforts” to comply with the Democrats’ investigations into the inner workings of the Trump administration.
Currently, the Democrats are attempting to obtain documentation related to the administration’s decision to alter 2020 Census questions to ask respondents about their legal status in the United States. They claim that the question will decrease census participation in areas with high immigrant populations.
If the House votes for the measure, it will allow the Dems to seek both civil and criminal contempt for refusing to comply with the subpoenas. The Justice Department has previously informed the committee that the president would use executive privilege if they held the vote, and it appears Trump wasn’t bluffing.
The Battle Continues
If anyone thought the left’s attempts to unseat President Trump would end after special counsel Robert Mueller confirmed that Trump did not collude with the Kremlin to win the 2016 election, they were sorely mistaken. The desperate Democrats are willing to use any tactic at their disposal, including baseless accusations.
It is apparent the anti-Trumpers wish to remove the president before the 2020 election because they fear they will not be able to convince the American people to vote him out of office. Considering the candidates seeking the nomination, one can’t blame them. But despite their best efforts, these investigations do not seem likely to turn up any information that could justify impeachment. It looks like the Dems will have to try to beat Trump the old-fashioned way.
