The Cry from the Left: Trump Delenda Est

The national Democratic Party has decided that its voter base demands it subsume itself entirely in “The Resistance” to the Trump Administration. In joining this polyglot movement uniting disparate elements around shopworn leftist orthodoxies that should have expired long ago, 2017’s Democrats have adopted a platform consisting of but one plank. Echoing Cato the Elder’s habitual warnings to the Roman Senate, Democrats proclaim everywhere, all the time that “Trump must be destroyed”—the man, his family, his fortune, his appointees, his policies, his supporters—regardless of cost to citizen or institution.

How to explain this seeming departure from the typical American pattern of accepting the electoral facts, and then continuing the fight in the various constitutional and other forums the system provides? Why is it so different this time? Why are presidential tax returns more important than an eyeball to eyeball confrontation in Northeast Asia? Why must we place the travel and residential preferences of non-US citizens over the security of Americans? Why must non-leftists be barred from the Supreme Court? Why persist in perpetuating the myth of a successful Russian plot to elect Donald Trump, which threatens to become our own Dreyfus Affair, poisoning US politics for a generation? When was the definition of peaceful transfer of power amended to: “permitting Donald Trump to be inaugurated but then moving directly to Impeachment?” Even Herblock gave Richard Nixon a free shave in 1968, so what gives?

It is not enough simply to observe that this phenomenon represents an open revolt against the constitutional order. Maxine Waters, anarchic leftist thugs, and boiling mad progressive Viragos have been with us for a while—what ignited this particular fury? Far from rejecting the rules of the game, as some have suggested, the current madness is the product of a cynical effort on the part of the putative leaders of the progressive left, which incorporates political, media, and academic elites, to stay in that game.

These worthies already have three strikes against them. First, backing a posturing mediocrity as their presidential candidate in 2008, second, doubling down on the bad bet in 2012, and third, rigging the primary rules to ensure selection of a status quo candidate over an insurgent primarily to preserve the illusion of Obama’s success. For the current generation of elites to retain their power, they must sacrifice everything else to stopping Trump from proving them wrong with alternative policies that could restore economic well-being and security. With no other choice, they scramble to the front of their restive troops, endorsing any outrage against reason or taste in a desperate effort to survive by denying Trump’s administration the ability to act.  Obama’s legacy must be preserved, not for his sake, but for theirs.

The party, media and academic “leaders” who now must back Black Lives Matter, unrestrained immigration, campus craziness and Sanctuary Cities without reservation, told us that Obama was the greatest man ever to put his feet on White House furniture. He was visionary, and he was brilliant. The apparent pain he inflicted on Americans, confusion he sowed in government, subversion of institutions and liberties, and disorder, humiliation, and vulnerabilities he fostered abroad were mere false consciousness, borne of our impatience and lack of vision, compounded, or course, by hostile media conservatives. Therefore, if they allow Donald Trump and his Deplorables to dismantle Obama’s paradise, they will be turned out and replaced by genuine zealots. Schumer, Pelosi, Perez, Zucker and all the overfed academic administrators, cable news talking heads, bureaucrats and think tank experts are not fools; they know what it now takes to survive, or failing that, to at least maintain a convincing enough radical posture to keep the checks coming in. Trump delenda est; they’re all crazies now. Get used to it.
