Only a few days after Attorney General Merrick Garland announced he would be ordering the FBI to investigate opponents of Critical Race Theory (CRT) and vaccine mandates in classrooms, people are still outraged over the move. Conservatives are accusing President Joe Biden’s Justice Department of politicizing the bureau and use it to squash dissent.
Conservatives Cry Foul
Several right-leaning politicians and media figures publicly denounced Garland’s announcement, arguing that it would result in the FBI specifically targeting those protesting CRT and vaccine mandates. They contended that if viable threats are being issued against school board members, it should be handled by local police instead of the feds.
Missouri Attorney General and Senate candidate Eric Schmitt took to Twitter to criticize the Justice Department’s announcement:
“Joe Biden is weaponizing his DOJ and using the FBI to pursue parents advocating for their kids at school board meetings. It’s meant to quell dissent and intimidate. It’s dangerous and they have no jurisdiction.
Not in Missouri. Not in any state.”
Kelley Paul, wife of Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY), also tweeted her opposition to using the FBI against conservative parents and protesters. She wrote:
“On May 28, a Republican-hating woman called Rand’s DC Senate office threatening to “shoot you all” to our staff member. She was never charged. Yet if you dare express indignation at a school board meeting about CRT or forced masks, the Biden DOJ and FBI say you’re a criminal.”
Christina Pushaw, press secretary for Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, pointed out that people who issue threats aren’t just on one side of the aisle. She wrote:
“Disagreeing w/ elected officials is not a crime. Protesting forced-masking & racist CRT indoctrination of children is not a crime. Harassment & threats ARE crimes, but aren’t confined to one political side.
Florida law enforcement is perfectly capable of responding to crimes.”
Sen. Lindsay Graham (R-SC), in an appearance on Newsmax, said: “If somebody shows up to a school board meeting and then makes an A– of themselves, have the local cops kick you out. This is not within the FBI’s jurisdiction.”
Are They Right?
Some have dismissed the concerns of those who fear the FBI will be used to silence dissent on these hot-button issues. The fact that Garland’s memo announcing the investigations only mentions situations in which members of school boards are threatened by conservatives lends credibility to this belief. There have also been threats made against people who have spoken out against CRT specifically.
Quisha King, a spokesperson with Moms 4 Liberty who went viral when footage showed her expressing her opinion on CRT being taught in her children’s school, has received disturbing messages as well. She told Liberty Nation that someone sent her a message saying, “I hope the worse of what happened to slaves happens to you.”
Regardless of the Justice Department’s true intentions, it is clear this problem is still not going away. The fact that the federal government seems to be getting involved is only exacerbating the situation. This is sure to be a significant issue in the upcoming midterm elections and perhaps even beyond.
