Finally, the right is fighting back against the left’s attempts to stifle conservative voices. The Media Research Center and Media Equalizer are teaming up to combat left-wing organizations that work to minimize conservative opinions in the news. On Wednesday, they launched the #StopTheScalping movement to oppose the left by using their own tactics against them.
One of the weapons conservatives will deploy is the boycott. The left has repeatedly used this strategy against Fox News. Leftist media watchdog Media Matters has been at the forefront of this assault. Here is how it works – the left targets a popular show and host on Fox News. They publish the names of the companies who advertise on these shows and encourage their followers to contact these organizations and threaten them with boycotts. The advertiser gives in to their demands and pulls their ads. This approach can cause great harm to news outlets such as Fox News. Bill O’ Reilly was the latest casualty of this type of attack.
The Media Research Center and Media Equalizer have decided that two can play at this game. The #StopTheScalping campaign will directly oppose the left’s use of boycotts to coerce companies into acquiescing to their demands. Brent Bozell, the founder of The Media Research Center, stated that they will be paying attention to various news programs and watch for attempts to smear conservatives:
Every time one of their on-air personalities go beyond political commentary and engage in smear and hate, we are going to unleash an army of activists to contact these advertisers by phone and through social media to ask them why they are advertising on programs that are so biased, repulsive and morally bankrupt.
The #StopTheScalping campaign intends to oppose Media Matters by adopting the same strategies the leftist organization has used for years. Mr. Bozell goes on to state:
To counteract these fascistic tactics, #StoptheScalpings has decided to fight fire with fire. As long as Media Matters continues to attack conservatives, we will return them the same kindness. We begin with Rachel Maddow who has been the biggest purveyor of lies and propaganda in the media today. Like Media Matters, we will now inform the public and the advertisers about who they are financing.
Naturally, the left is not very happy about this. Giving groups like Media Matters a taste of their own medicine hardly seems fair – to them! Leftist publication Salon recently weighed in on this issue:
Part of what makes this so offensive, of course, is that the most prominent conservative commentator to be attacked by liberals was former Fox News host Bill O’Reilly. In his case, the campaign against him was based on reports that he had been accused of sexually harassing many of his female co-workers, not his political views.
Salon would like us to believe that Media Matters went after Bill O’ Reilly because of the allegations of sexual harassment. Indeed, if the allegations are true, then Mr. O’ Reilly is responsible for his ouster. However, Salon is disingenuous. The left does not care about Mr. O’ Reilly’s alleged behavior, as these accusations came to light years ago without much ado from progressives. This scandal was pushed back into the spotlight when the New York Times published a report revealing a number of the settlements paid by Fox News and Mr. O’ Reilly. There were no concerted efforts to boycott the ‘O Reilly Factor before the New York Times report.
Media Matters has gone after other Fox News hosts. They are currently targeting Sean Hannity over his coverage of the Seth Rich conspiracy story, and Hannity wasn’t accused of sexual harassment. They also attacked radio talk show host Rush Limbaugh and former Fox News host Glenn Beck – neither of these men was alleged to have engaged in any misconduct. Salon is deliberately attempting to mislead the American public about the motivation behind Media Matters’ operations.
The reality is that the left is trying to win the culture war by shutting down conservative voices. The easiest way to avoid a debate is by preventing your opponents from expressing their ideas. They have had some victories up until this point, but if movements like #StopTheScalping can run a successful campaign, the left will face to the same treatment they have inflicted on the right. Perhaps it is time to fight fire with fire.
