Last Thursday former F.B.I. Director James Comey gave testimony that was a massive disappointment to the left. Ever since President Trump fired Mr. Comey, Democrats have been salivating over the opportunity to get Comey on the stand. Members of the leftist establishment media fantasize about hearing Mr. Comey say: “Yes America, President Trump colluded with Russia to influence the election. Then, he tried to make me stop the investigation. He’s a very bad man.”
In anticipation of this moment, the establishment media published report after report in an effort to push their baseless Trump/Russia collusion narrative. MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow and Chris Matthews all but begged us to believe their allegations without seeing the evidence. The Washington Post told us that Trump lied when he said Mr. Comey stated that the president was not personally under investigation. The New York Times declared that Trump aides had repeated conversations with Russian intelligence agents. The reality is that every single one of these media outlets was putting the truth to the test.
When the day finally came, so-called progressive journalists and pundits waited with bated breath for Comey to deliver the goods. However, instead of affirming their narrative, he accidentally showed the American public the depth and breadth of our corrupt media. His testimony repudiated each of these claims and dealt yet another blow to their already damaged credibility.
After Mr. Comey had leaked his memo detailing a conversation with Trump regarding former National Security Advisor Michael Flynn, the mainstream media hurried to tell the American public that Trump had attempted to obstruct the Russia investigation. However, Comey stated that he did not believe the president was trying to stop the Russia probe because Trump’s comments were related to Michael Flynn’s conversations with Russia during the transition period.
The former F.B.I. Director also destroyed the Washington Post’s falsehood regarding Trump personally being under investigation. In a piece published in April, The Washington Post stated:
In his Tuesday letter dismissing Comey, Trump wrote: “I greatly appreciate you informing me, on three separate occasions, that I am not under investigation.” People familiar with the matter said that statement is not accurate, although they would not say how it was inaccurate.
Under oath, Mr. Comey stated that he had informed the president that the F.B.I. was not investigating him. So much for the Washington Post’s anonymous source.
The New York Times availed themselves of a massive helping of humble pie as Comey obliterated one of their earlier pieces stating that Trump aides had engaged in repeated communication with Russian agents. Earlier this year, the New York Times published an article entitled “Trump Campaign Aides Had Repeated Contacts with Russian Agents.” The piece advanced the notion that there was repeated contact between Trump associates and Russian intelligence. Of course, this story was designed to bolster the Russiagate narrative and further convince readers that Trump collaborated with the Kremlin. When asked if the Times’ piece was “entirely wrong” Mr. Comey answered with a simple “yes.”
Finally, we have Chris Matthews of MSNBC, the bastion of all things progressive. Mr. Matthews was one of the pundits who pushed the Trump/Russia story the hardest – even going so far as the accuse the president of launching a missile strike on Syria in order to distract from the investigation. He said:
Here’s a President who’s under incredible scrutiny for his relations, such as they were, with the Russians in all those months that the Russians were helping him get elected President. And here he is tonight apparently — we’re hearing lots of talks about it with guests we’ve had on — that there may be military action against Russia’s number one ally, which is Syria. Is this to cover his tracks?
No doubt Matthews felt that familiar thrill down the side of his leg when he heard that James Comey was going to give his testimony to Congress. Unfortunately, that thrill likely turned into a headache when Comey did not say that the F.B.I. has found evidence that President Trump worked with Russia to win the election. After the testimony, Matthews went on air and admitted that the collusion narrative is starting to “fall apart.” Sorry about that, Chris.
The establishment media continues to lose credibility because of their refusal to report the news without attempting to sway public opinion. Mr. Comey’s testimony is yet another event that has exposed the ways in which the mainstream media uses their platform to attack the Trump administration. As long as the establishment news outlets insist on publishing leftist propaganda instead of actual news, the American public will continue to lose faith in the organizations who are supposed to be informing them. Unfortunately, judging from their continued behavior, it appears the establishment media does not have any plans to alter their doomed strategy anytime soon.
