It’s time to engage in a little bit of schadenfreude.
Yes, I understand it’s wrong to take pleasure in others’ misfortunes, but when it’s CNN, I can make an exception. According to Deadline, the left-wing news outlet suffered a 52% decrease in viewership in October.
The question is: why is this happening? The answer is simple. Americans watch the news to become informed, not influenced.
The Problem With CNN
CNN, like most other news organizations, uses its platform as a weapon with which to attack President Donald Trump and other conservatives. As many on the right know, CNN functions more as a propaganda arm of the Democratic Party than an actual news reporting agency.
They routinely report stories in a way that is designed to smear the Trump administration and further the leftist agenda. The news organization typically presents the facts that support their position while ignoring those that don’t. In some situations, they have used deception in an attempt sway public opinion in the left’s favor.
Media bias has been an issue for decades, but over the past year, more Americans have caught on to the press’ game. As a result, the public has grown to distrust the establishment media, which has had an adverse effect on organizations like CNN. There are many stories that CNN has reported that show their extreme bias, but there are a few that stand out from the rest.
CNN: The Premier Purveyor Of “Fake News”
This past week, Sayfullo Saipov, a radical Islamic terrorist, brutally murdered eight people in New York City by running them over with a truck. As they do with many terrorist attacks, CNN attempted to minimize the role of Islam in the assault.
For starters, CNN’s Shimon Prokupecz refused to give a physical description of the terrorist while reporting on the incident. “Police know who he is,” Prokupecz said. “They have a description of him. I’m not going to share that at the moment.”
Next, they reported that Saipov yelled out “God is great” while carrying out the attack. The reality is that he shouted, “Allahu Akbar” — which is the war cry of jihadis when they are committing violent acts. CNN’s reporting in this regard is obviously deceptive; “Allahu Akbar” is how one says “God is great” in Arabic. However, the terrorist wasn’t speaking English — he was using a standard slogan used by other radical Islamists.
CNN’s Jake Tapper attempted to put a positive spin on the phrase when he was reporting on the event. “The Arabic chant ‘Allahu Akbar,’ God is great, sometimes is said under the most beautiful of circumstances. And too often, we hear it being said in moments like this,” he said on “The Lead.”
But that isn’t all. Remember when WikiLeaks released the emails that were stolen from the Democratic National Committee? In an attempt to perform damage control for the Democrats, CNN’s Chris Cuomo tried to persuade Americans not to read the emails by claiming it was illegal. “Also interesting is, remember, it’s illegal to possess these stolen documents. It’s different for the media. So everything you learn about this, you’re learning from us,” he said.
The problem? It was a blatant lie. It is illegal to obtain information by hacking, but it is not unlawful for individuals to read the documents after they are published. The law does not prevent Americans from viewing the leaked emails as long they were not involved in stealing them.
Lastly, three high-profile journalists at CNN were forced to resign after they reported a false story about former White House Press Secretary Anthony Scaramucci. The report claimed that Scaramucci was linked to a Russian investment fund. However, the former press secretary had nothing to do with the firm — and he wasn’t too happy about CNN making such a false assertion.
Not only did he take to Twitter to express his displeasure, but he also called CNN and said:
“I’m not under investigation, I’ve done nothing wrong. I sort of feel like you guys have to clear this up, and if you don’t clear it up, then, of course, I have to take action to protect myself and my reputation.”
CNN later retracted the story and the journalists who reported the story stepped down.
CNN’s Blatant Biases Are Backfiring
You would think that CNN would have learned their lesson by now. Functioning as an anti-Trump machine while pretending to be objective does not attract viewers, it repels them.
The fact that they lost over half of their viewership last month is clear evidence that people do not want propaganda, they want the news. Biased reporting may have served CNN well in the past, but as this latest story shows, the news organization is now suffering because of it. Unfortunately for them, it doesn’t seem like they will wise up anytime soon.
