The powers-that-be recently revved up their social media censorship machine, with a new target in their crosshairs. Two popular social media platforms banned conservative journalist Laura Loomer over her criticism of a Democratic politician’s embrace of anti-Semitic positions.
Earlier this year, social media purged content created by conservative provocateur Alex Jones and his Infowars organization, effectively eliminating their presence across online platforms. This recent move against Loomer brings up an important question: Who’s next?
Brush with Anti-Semitism
The freelance activist and reporter journalist – who previously worked for Project Veritas and the Rebel Media – had taken to Twitter to criticize Representative-elect Ilhan Omar (D-MN), a Muslim who has also served as a state senator. Loomer slammed the soon-to-be lawmaker for her alleged support of female genital mutilation (FGM), Sharia law, and the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanction (BDS) movement that “works to end international support for Israel’s oppression of Palestinians.”
Omar, who was recently elected to the House during the midterm elections, has a history of denouncing Israel. She recently called the U.S. an “apartheid state,” and said that she is a supporter of the BDS movement, which seeks to cut off aid to Israel and apply sanctions on the Jewish state because of the Israeli/Palestinian conflict.
In 2017, the Minnesota House passed HF400, also known as the Israel Boycott Ban bill, which prohibited the state government, including universities, from doing business with vendors who don’t boycott Israel. Omar voted against the bill, stating that she didn’t “want to be part of a vote that limits the ability of people to fight towards justice and peace.”
Social Media Censorship
“Isn’t it ironic how the Twitter moment used to celebrate ‘women, LGBTQ, and minorities’ is a picture of Ilhan Omar?” Loomer asked on Twitter. “Ilhan is pro-Sharia Ilhan is pro FGM. Under Sharia homosexuals are oppressed and killed. Women are abused and forced to wear the hijab. Ilhan is anti-Jewish.”
Twitter decided that the tweet violated their “rules against hateful conduct,” and permanently banned her from the platform. Facebook followed suit less than a day later.
The journalist released a statement on Gab – an alternative media platform recently subjected to its own round of shutdown attempts by internet providers – slamming Twitter and Facebook for censoring her speech. “Free speech is under attack by the Left and big tech companies in this country,” she said. “My haters are celebrating today, and they are saying this is the end of my career, but I want everyone to know I’m just getting started. Everyone who knows me knows I don’t back down.”
Social Media’s Hypocrisy
Loomer is the latest prominent figure on the right to have her access to Twitter and Facebook revoked due to comments that contradict the progressive agenda. Still, the accounts belonging to Nation of Islam founder and notorious anti-Semite Louis Farrakhan, and journalist Sarah Jeong, who posted racist tweets against whites are still intact.
When Infowars content was removed from Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube, many on the left justified it, arguing that the channel’s penchant for dealing in conspiracy theories and heated rhetoric necessitated its removal. They claimed that this move was not an indicator of active movement against conservative voices on the internet.
However, many on the right knew better, and they recognized the writing on the wall. There is no question that Loomer is a controversial figure, but she is clearly no different from many of the rabble-rousers on the left, who enjoy nearly unlimited access to the major social media platforms.
The progressive left is intent on shutting down as many conservatives online as possible.
These are not isolated incidents. The progressive left is intent on shutting down as many conservatives online as possible. Alternative media has provided a way for right-leaning Americans to sidestep the left-wing media monolith, and their ability to reach people through other means is a dire threat to the left’s near-monopoly on the institutions that are typically used to communicate ideas.
Unfortunately for the progressive movement, conservatives have found other ways to circumvent this vein of censorship and counter the attempts to squelch differing voices online. As long as right-leaning Americans remain vigilant, the left will not succeed in their effort to make speech less free.
