Rep. Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick (D-FL), who faces a 15-count federal criminal indictment for allegedly misappropriating federal disaster relief money, announced her immediate resignation from Congress April 23.
In addition to the prospect of facing decades in prison, the Sunshine State Democrat had been under investigation by the House Ethics Committee. Cherfilus-McCormick had already filed to run for reelection. It is now unclear whether she will continue her campaign. The Congresswoman publicly announced her decision on social media. "Rather than play these political games, I choose to step away so I can devote my time to fighting for my neighbors in Florida's 20th District," she wrote, in part.
Among other things, Cherfilus-McCormick has been accused of funneling disaster relief funds to a family company. Republicans were preparing to try to expel her from Congress.
