New York Governor Andrew Cuomo is seeking a deal with senior officials in the state to avoid impeachment, a source told The City. Cuomo is apparently offering to scrap his plans to run for re-election in 2022 if the state legislature abandons potential impeachment proceedings.
New York has no term limits on governors and Cuomo had already signaled his intention to seek a fourth term as the state’s chief executive. His current term ends on the last day of 2022.
Melissa DeRosa, the governor’s top aide, resigned on August 8. Roberta Kaplan, chairwoman of Time’s Up, a legal defense fund that works on behalf of sexual harassment victims, resigned on August 9 following the revelation that she helped Cuomo draft a letter smearing one of the 11 women who accused him of sexual misconduct.
After receiving a criminal complaint from one of the governor’s accusers, Albany County Sheriff Craig Apple confirmed that his agency was conducting a criminal investigation into Cuomo.
