The hard left scored another victory in the battle over free speech on Saturday.
The Boston Free Speech Coalition had organized a Free Speech Rally that was set to take place in the Boston Commons. However, due to the bullying behavior of the leftist counter-protesters, the event ended soon after it began.
Antifa, Black Lives Matter, and other leftist groups – which outnumbered the rally participants ten to one – arrived and shouted down the participants. Fox News reported that the counter-protesters totaled around 15,000 people while the Free Speech activists were made up just of a few dozen individuals.
Many feared that the rally would turn into a violent incident similar to what occurred in Charlottesville, VA last weekend. While the Free Speech rally did not result in the same level of physical violence, there were instances of violent behavior on the part of leftist protesters. Reuters reported that protesters dressed in black “threw rocks and bottles of urine” at police officers. Leftist protesters also snatched an American flag from a woman and dragged her to the ground. The latest reports suggest 27 leftist activist arrests.

One of the reasons why the rally did not devolve into violence is because of the significant police presence. In preparation for the event, the city deployed more than 500 police officers, constructed barriers, and installed security cameras. The counter-protesters surrounded the rally participants and chanted “we can’t hear you” whenever one of the rally goers started to speak. Eventually, the Free Speech activists were forced to give up and leave while being escorted by the police.
The Boston Free Speech Coalition is an organization founded in response to the many violent protests that have occurred at conservative events. The Boston Globe reports that members of the group started to communicate online to “express alarm” over the support for leftist protesters who engage and use physical force to suppress the speech of conservatives. Organizer, John Medlar said “We were alarmed that people were OK with fringe anarchists burning down a campus and driving [out] speakers.’’
On its Facebook page, the organization identifies itself as “a coalition of libertarians, progressives, conservatives, and independents,” to “peaceably engage in open dialogue about the threats to, and the importance of, free speech and civil liberties.” The group also used their Facebook page to disassociate themselves from white supremacy:
While we maintain that every individual is entitled to their freedom of speech and defend that basic human right, we will not be offering our platform to racism or bigotry. We denounce the politics of supremacy and violence. We denounce the actions, activities, and tactics of the so-called Antifa movement. We denounce the normalization of political violence.
The rally in Boston is an example of the left’s concerted effort to violate the First Amendment rights of their political opponents. By using violence and deception, they kept these people from exercising their right to freedom of expression. Efforts to silence the rally goers began even before the event began. In the days leading up to the event, the media ran misleading stories about the event to characterize the Boston Free Speech Coalition as an alt-right group.
CNN published an article which classified the Boston Free Speech Coalition as an “alt-right group.” The problem is that the organization never identified themselves in this way. CNN lumped them in with the alt-right to draw a false comparison between the Boston Free Speech Coalition and the white supremacist groups at Charlottesville.
Conservatives need to do something about this. The left is using every resource at their disposal to stifle the speech of people on the right – and if we don’t stand up, they will succeed. The incident in Charlottesville has given the left momentum – and their efforts to label all conservative groups as “alt-right” or white supremacists are intensifying.
The Free Speech Rally in Boston had nothing to do with racism, and yet we saw leftist protesters claiming that they are fighting racism. Moreover, the establishment media – who previously ignored groups like Antifa – are now launching a campaign to lionize these people who use fascist tactics to force their views on others, likening Antifa to soldiers who fought real Nazis during World War II.
If we are going to protect our First Amendment rights, we need to expose these hard leftists groups for what they are: violent bullies who use fascist tactics to silence those with whom they disagree. We cannot afford to allow them to have more victories as they did in Boston. Otherwise, we run the risk of forfeiting our right to free expression.
