The centerpiece of the progressive left’s support of sanctuary cities is the notion that the government should protect illegal immigrants from being treated unfairly. But what about those who suffer because of sanctuary laws that enable criminals to victimize more people?
At a recent Senate Judiciary Committee hearing, an official working with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) revealed a terrifying truth about sanctuary cities and how they affect everyday citizens. But will the left take note?
Study Reveals Disturbing Truth about Sanctuary Cities
Timothy Robbins, the Acting Executive Associate Director for ICE, recently testified in front of lawmakers about the illegal immigration problem. He explained that an alarming number of illegal aliens who were incarcerated for committing additional crimes after entering the country in violation of immigration laws are being released under sanctuary laws in various cities across the nation. Many of these individuals go on to commit more crimes after their release:
“What we’ve seen, and depending on the report you look at, anywhere from 40% to 80% of those who have committed crimes will re-offend. In that regard, what we’re seeing is crimes that could be preventable, the human cost who are being victimized and hurt by criminal aliens that ICE had the ability to remove from this country.”
The Washington Times recently reported on the murder of Juan Carlos Con Guzman, a teenager who was killed by an illegal alien in King County, WA. Two members of the MS-13 street gang who were released under sanctuary laws viciously beat and dismembered Guzman because of an argument. If these individuals had been handed over to ICE and not released, the teenager would likely still be alive today.
Choosing Criminals over Citizens
Sanctuary cities like Los Angeles release thousands of illegal alien criminals each year despite the apparent impact on their communities. The majority of those who enter the country illegally do not commit additional crimes after crossing the border. But the notion that cities would protect the ones who do is a dangerous prospect, especially when it comes to violent offenders.
Democrats have become increasingly radical on the issue of illegal immigration over the years. Leftist leaders support an open borders agenda under a guise of compassion and empathy. But their true motivations might not be quite so altruistic. Allowing more immigrants to enter the country illegally could give Democrats an electoral advantage in national elections. Perhaps this is the reason they are willing to endanger the people they are supposed to serve?
