Are Alvin Bragg’s Dreams of Indictment Derailing?

Delays and cautions could signal the end of the whole show.

Manhattan DA Alvin Bragg’s plans to indict former President Donald Trump may be slipping through his fingers. Although his office has been unusually tight-lipped about a schedule for a potential arrest of Trump over an alleged hush-money payment to an adult film actress in 2016, a series of reversals and delays has caused speculation over whether Bragg has the goods or not. Judging by the lukewarm support from his fellow Democrats in Washington, DC, the prosecutor may be wondering if he is politically stranded.

The grand jury meeting that was scheduled to take place on Wednesday, March 22, was abruptly canceled with no reason given to the public. According to Fox News, “the grand jury was canceled amid ‘major dissension’ within the district attorney’s office. One source claimed the district attorney is having trouble convincing the grand jury on potential charges due to the ‘weakness’ of the case.”

The New York Post reports that a “source with ties to the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office” believes the delay is a signifier of trepidation. “The last thing he wants is for the grand jury to vote against him,” the source relates. “He wants a no-doubt-about-it case. He is pressuring the ‘Trump obsessed’ to step up and prove the case.”

According to the Post, “Bragg’s office also said a substantial number of assistant district attorneys were ‘shaking their heads’ over Bragg’s decision to pursue Trump.”

Out There and Alone?

One might suspect anti-Trump politicians would be keen to make hay over the potential arrest of their greatest enemy. Yet little more than the chirping of crickets echos through the halls of the Capitol. Tightly measured statements, and even some pooh-poohing, appear to be the limit of public support.

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) refused to answer whether he had confidence in the probe, simply saying, “Look, the bottom line is, as I said, it’s premature to comment on what’s happening, and we’ll have to wait and see what he does.” Other Democrats were even more dismissive. Senator Joe Manchin (WV) warned that Bragg’s actions could easily backfire. He said:

“There’s many reasons not to support Donald Trump. There’s many reasons why Donald Trump should not be president again of the United States, but you should not allow the court system to be viewed as a political pawn… I think it would basically have the reverse effect as what some people would think, not for the good.”

Bragg’s Gamble

The attempted prosecution is a potentially perilous course for DA Bragg. He has much to gain but even more to lose should he fail to either get an indictment or make a case compelling enough to avoid accusations of political bias. As Liberty Nation recently summarized:

“The media circus has already hit town, and expectations on the left are high. If this attempted prosecution is – as many suspect – a launchpad to a more significant office, no Trump arrest could expose the DA to accusations of ineffectiveness and of promising something he cannot deliver. This situation is made worse by his unwillingness to prosecute so many other crimes in his district.

Anti-Trump New Yorkers may forgive Bragg for not cleaning up the streets of violent crime if he were to bring down Trump, but without the perp walk, what can he demonstrate that he has done for the Big Apple residents?”

Trump Responds

Naturally, the former president did not want to be left out of the action. In a fiery TruthSocial message, he declared: “The Rogue prosecutor, who is having a hard time with the Grand Jury, especially after the powerful testimony against him by Felon Cohen’s highly respected former lawyer, is attempting to build a case that has NEVER BEEN BROUGHT BEFORE AND ACTUALLY, CAN’T BE BROUGHT.”

“If he spent this time, effort, and money on fighting VIOLENT CRIME, which is destroying NYC, our once beautiful and safe Manhattan, which has become an absolute HELLHOLE, would be a much better place to live!” Trump continued.

Author Sara Niles once noted, “If the compulsive spirit of gambling is a sickness for the gambler, then it is like secondhand smoke for the family of the gambler.” In this scenario, Bragg is a two-pack-a-day man and his party is the long-suffering family. Just how much pollution his political family is willing to put up with could well determine not only Bragg’s future, but the prospects for the country.
