President Donald Trump is preparing to issue executive orders that aggressively reduce the United States’ involvement in the United Nations, along with other international organizations. And it’s about time.
President Trump will accomplish this with two draft orders. The first is titled “Auditing and Reducing U.S. Funding of International Organizations.” This order will eliminate any funding for the United Nations or any other international body that meets the following criteria:
- Provides full membership to the Palestinian Authority or Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO).
- Supports programs that fund abortion.
- Engages in any activity that undermines sanctions against Iran or North Korea.
- Is “controlled or substantially influenced by any state that sponsors terrorism.”
- Is blamed for the persecution of marginalized groups or any other violation of human rights.
Additionally, the order implements a forty percent overall decrease in United States funding for international organizations. The United States currently accounts for twenty-two percent of the U.N.’s annual budget.
The second draft, entitled “Moratorium on New Multilateral Treaties,” addresses current and pending treaties that involve more than one nation. The order will only be applied to treaties that are not “directly related to national security, extradition, or international trade.” With this order, the President is also requesting recommendations to help him determine which treaties the United States should abandon.
Over the past few decades, the United Nations has transformed from a legitimate peacekeeping force to an organization that ignores human rights abuses in Islamic countries and dictatorships while castigating Western democracies. For example, In December of 2016, the U.N. passed a resolution condemning Israeli settlements as illegal.
This resolution was one of twenty anti-Israel resolutions enacted in 2016. They only passed three resolutions against other nations. Of course, this shouldn’t come as a shock. The United Nations has an atrocious history of being unfairly biased against Israel while being continuously dominated by countries that routinely engage in human rights abuses. It has become an instrument of dictatorships and Islamic theocracies whose only goal is to work towards their own self-interests.
This has been a long time coming.
Last month, the United Nations sent a clear message that they will continue to attack Israel while ignoring the far more deplorable actions of many other countries around the rest of the world. President Trump’s executive orders serve as a rejoinder to that message, warning the United Nations that we are no longer interested in supporting an organization that doesn’t focus on the real issues our world faces. We are refusing to fund agencies who work against our interests and values.
I guess you could say we are putting America first.
